Glad I didnt buy the HD-DVD player for my 360. I think had Microsoft tried a little harder and put the drive in the 360 initially this would have been different.

This is yet another reason not to buy something when it first comes out. Think of all the people that have spent hundreds of dollars on HD DVD players that are about to be obsolete. I have been putting off getting an HD tv till I knew the pros and cons of Plasma, LCD, HD DVD, and Blu Ray. For instance I learned for longevity you want LCD not Plasma. Not to mention if you wait it costs less. And lately the good bet has been Sony.

LCD has just gotten a lot better with the advent of pixelated backlight too. Makes me wonder why it took them so long to think of using many small backlights instead of one large one. It boasts a much better contrast ratio.

I held back on buying either new DVD tech. I want to see cheaper ps3's before I spend money on a blu ray player.

I went with a 51" Samsung DLP. I knew from the beginning that Plasma wasn't the way to go.

Years ago I bought a 15" LCD computer monitor with a built-in TV tuner. After using it I was anxious for larger LCDs to hit the market.

Right now the large LCDs are expensive, but prices will steadily drop.

As for the HD-DVD Blu-Ray war - I bought a PS3 for games but held off on buying Blue-Ray discs until I knew what was going to happen. The only two I own were bought at CompUSA's going out of business sale.

DLP is mighty nice, but I think the LCD will win in the long run. The nice thing about DLP is no burn in, and previously better contrast ratios and refresh rates. Plasma is just expensive and costly to keep running, but they were the brightest on the market when introduced.

I'm pretty disgusted at Sony for their underhanded tactics to get blu-ray to the forefront. They basically paid off all the major production companies to break their hd-dvd contracts. We're talking millions of dollars here.

I guess they were still sore after the betamax loss. As much as I like high definition, it will be quite a while before I buy anything bluray because of this.

That article is interesting in how it was written. The author is either uninformed or they're specifically staying away from why all those companies moved off of hd-dvd. They were paid off. There is a blog written by someone who works at Sony and he leaked this info about a month ago when they actually went through with it. Market forces were leaning towards hd-dvd (the adult movie industry was going with hd-dvd, which is one of the large reasons betamax didn't survive) and Sony was more or less desperate not to lose again.

Market forces, my butt. Blu Ray outsold HD-DVD in media sales every single week of 2007...before Warner shunned HD-DVD for Blu Ray.

Also, don't think that the HD-DVD camp wasn't paying out to lure studios to their side as well. The fact is, it's a big business and the Blu Ray consortium decided to pay to be on top in the Hi Def DVD arena.

IMO, the real downfall of HD-DVD was Microsofts lack of an HD-DVD player included in the original release of the XBOX360.

Blu ray has been a better technology from the beginning. Toshiba didn't want to spend the extra on blue lasers so they chose to help get HD dvd started in order to try and grab the bulk of the market. Now blue lasers are much cheaper and will only continue to drop in price. Blu Ray has better potential; TDK has built some discs in a 8 layer format that are upwards of 200gigs.

I remember when the HD movie technology just started coming out and everything I read about the two different formats said that Blu-Ray would be non-existent in a couple of years and the sole format would end up HD-DVD.

There's a guy at work who's going to be mighty upset when he finds this out after spending what he did on his Toshiba system:-P And he's one of those guys that has to have everything better than the other guy and spends some huge wads of cash to do so....I can't wait to be the one to break the news to him

Transformers was on HD-DVD or standard DVD only.

I bought the widescreen standard and played it in the PS3 - upconverted to 1080.

I kind of figured that HD-DVD would win the war this time around. The Blu-Ray discs cost more (and require new equipment to manufacture) to produce.

That's the reason the porn industry was going with HD-DVD (and since the porn industry sided with VHS it was expected that HD-DVD would prevail) - they could use all the existing equipment to produce discs.

So my only question is when is support/sales for standard DVD's going to end?

I, like Cloak, will not purchase a Sony backed product. I've been against Sony's backhanded business principles for years. Ask Sony about rootkits being installed when you insert a music CD into your computer? Only they did that.
