Default transmission woes.

I just replaced all of my mechanical kick down linkage on my transmission with a universal detent cable. It was actually a whole kit i bought that converted it all over, Because i replaced that junk weber carb i had with a Demon 2 barrel. My question is how do i adjust the detent cable? Because it feels like i am shifting through butter. By the way the transmission is a torqueflite 999. Behind a 258 inline six.
