Default Nitrous explotion, distroys Trans Am

:-(

no fire, just air pressure damage

bottle just peeled like a banana, appears to be a composite tank if thats the inside were seeing in the first pic, although the breaks look clean more like a standard metal tank. only background that was found, was that the bottle was bought used, and came out of a truck that caught fire.(and weakened it) obviously the blowdown tube/safety pressure release valve didnt do there job either. no word on weather the driver was inside, what cause the pressure build up. (sun, bottle warmer left on, etc)
ive left mine in the car plenty of times in the texas heat and it rarely ever reached 1000 psi.

i can only imagine the boom and shrapnel with that thing went off

Just a little heads up, make sure you leave the bottle closed while on the street, if you get in a wreck, even if its not your fault, it automatically becomes your fault. A guy from a local car club found that out a few weeks ago. The way they see it, is if the bottle is open, the car shouldn't have ever been there anyway.

It looks to me to be aluminum and if the black paint on it is factory then it is more than likely a Nitrous ProFlow bottle.

Most pop offs do not blow until 3000psi and there is always the chance that if the bottle was out of something that caught fire it popped then and someone stuck a penny in it and screwed it back on.

Damn that must have made some noise when it went off. Still at least it didn't happen to a nice car .

I've heard of this before, there was a Nissan Maxima (second gen I think) that had that happen in the home owners garage and it literally blew the whole back of the car apart (atleast the Bird was a hathcback!) I also remember one of the old Hot Rod Magazine Fastest "Street" Car competetors (early 90's) having a tank blow while re filling it, IIRC it took out a wall of his shop, damaged his Nova, nearly killed him and his crew chief, and they found bits of tank atleast a quarter mile away
Main reason I only beleive in displacement and/or boost, plus you don't have to worry about BS open bottle valve laws or have to put tattle tale HAZMAT stickers on the car

Can you imagine how much more that would suck for the car owner if it happened in an airport parking lot!

In California, if you are in a wreck and somebody is injured or killed and you have an open (i heard possibly closed too) nitrous bottle you will actually be charged with a felony attempted vehicular manslaughter or vehicular manslaughter.

Also, this pretty much goes for any state, most insurance companies will cancel your policy if you have nitrous in your car. Nitrous is usually an exlusion in the policy. So read the policy carefully!!

i've seen a few bottle in the past do that. both times it was a bottle heater. one was a old school nos bottle heater and other was a bad temp switch. my friend runs a speed shop in sac he was telling me how common
it is to see a carbon fiber wrap bottle with burn marks and cap off blow off valves (scary especial in side the car)
