Do we really need to Bail out GM?????

With all the money they are spending in China? That's right I'm on the China kick again!!!! They have even moved their Technology division over there now designing and research.

http://media.gm.com/cn/gm/en/company/china/index.html

Why bail them out with our money, then allow them to spend it in China?

I also decided to add Ford to the list after reading this!!!

http://www.ford.com/aboutford/micros...mCaseChina.htm

I don't think we need to loan money to a company who is giving away plenty in China. Why not do this here????

Might as well add Chrysler to the list also!!!!!

Seems these companies want us to believe they are hurting bad. But when you look at what they are doing in other places. It makes you wonder!!!!!!!!!!!

XSRCdesign 12-06-2008 07:14 PM

If you read GM's plan to congress it includes the cutting of many of there workers here even in that senario..

It's kind of a damned if you do damned if you dont kind of thing...

At the end of the day, its not just Auto manufactures that do it, and without regulation, or penalty, there is no reason for them to stop (as a company)

The USA is the only failing market for domestic manufacturers. One of the best selling cars in China are Buicks.. and Ford is up there too. Hell, all the little 2dr commuter cars that they sell in Europe do awesome as well. They have turned their backs on us, but are embracing the rest of the world.

JeremyH 12-06-2008 08:53 PM

Add Ford to your list as well.....

toyofast 12-06-2008 09:18 PM

We had a Lincoln/Mercury dealership across the street close up shop and yesterday the Ford dealership next door was closed. Still standing is the Honda dealership across the street and ourselves(Toyota dealership) still selling cars....sure it's slower but still moving them.

JeremyH 12-07-2008 05:32 AM

Yep, Toyota does not employ people associated with Unions...

run2jeepn 12-07-2008 06:26 AM

They should just make them file for Chapter 11 like Chrysler did a while back. ( I think it was Chrysler anyway) They spend so much money of Concept Cars that will never see the Streets. No matter what is done. Some are going to loose there jobs. but fewer will loose there jobs if they start at the top. It's the higher ups that screwed up. Not the guys tunring bolts. The Unions pushed for things and the higher ups caved in. Which caused problems too.

Thats way I'm happy I picked a job that will never go away. Just keeps getting larger..:)

I would think that you'll get more business as times get tougher...:ror:

The problem w/ the auto makers (and the banks) is the government itself. All of the mandates and regulation is strangling.

You have these bleeding heart do gooders telling the auto makers how to build a car. Mandating they build all of these little shit box cars w/ high fuel economy that most Americans don't want. Slapping all these standards on them and forcing them to build cars w/ technology that doesn't even exist sometimes.

Add the UAW to the mix and it's a recipe for disaster.

Not saying the top brass as blameless either, but if the government would just stay the fawk out the car makers business (like the government knows anything about the car business:roll:) and let the market drive the design of the cars and trucks the manufactures produce, they would be in better shape.

Were heading for a centralized market(government controlled) and it will be a disaster. All you have to do is look at history and see that socialized markets are unsustainable.

Lets tell the Government to get the hell out of the way and let the free market do it's thing.

The way I see it, if we bail out the auto makers it still wont make the cars affordable for people. So they wont sell anyway.

JIA's Dad 12-07-2008 07:41 AM

Dezfan,
You make a good point here.

And I quote you (Add the UAW to the mix and it's a recipe for disaster).

The UAW effects what the automakers can do. They are keeping out some of the modernization of factories that could be done. In order to save high paying jobs in there workforce. Keeping out machines that could do the work of people. For example the new factory in Brazil which is setup with suppliers assembly lines in the automakers factory. A high tech facility for sure. Here is a video if the new Ford plant in Brazil, without the UAW we could also have these.

http://info.detnews.com/video/index.cfm?id=1189

I say let the major auto companies file for bankruptcy. Then they would not have to recognize the UAW as they would no longer have any official workers and therefor make the changes needed to improve wheir bottom lines in the lng run.

gregrocks90046 12-07-2008 09:46 AM

i say the oil companies should bail them out. they have both been in cahoots for a long time.

4u2nv 12-07-2008 11:23 AM

I don't usually get involved in these threads because they can get ugly but just one quick question...

Who's going to bale out "us" the working people in this country. You can give all the money you want to these companies and banks but if "we" don't have the money to buy their products they'll still go under in the long run.

Benzbuildr 12-07-2008 12:14 PM

I agree 4u2nv, with all the money they pumped into these huge corps they could have given that money to the people. I know it would help me, cause i sure would have used it, and helped stimulate the economy"thumbsup""thumbsup"

Corporate welfare, while children (and adults) in America are homeless and hungry? It's beyond shameful.

My 2 cents.

First thing you've ever posted that I agree with.

Robbob 12-07-2008 08:21 PM

Great points made. They need to bring those jobs BACK into the states but the only problem with that is they cant be profitable having the jobs state side while the UAW is as strong as they are or even there at all.

Job banks? why should the automakers pay a difference to employees they lay off? I get laid off I only get the unemployment, my employre doesnt pay me any extra. How many people could keep their jobs if they didnt have to pay into these banks?

Im not gonna attack solely the UAW, the head chiefs are the ones who let them get as big as they are. They should have put their foot down long ago but they were to busy taking in the luxuries and pay checks.

I agree with 4u2nv, if the gvmnt bails out the automakers then when are they gonna bail out all those who already lost their jobs? When are those still working gonna see anything to help them with their bills?

Im all against the last 8 years of what we had but when I hear our new President Elect talk about creating new jobs I only begin to wonder how long until the Corporate chiefs ship those jobs off again and start the cycle over.

The free market is doing its thing; that's why the Big 3 (as they used to be known) are in trouble.

The "free" market is determined by the automakers' advertising agencies. For years the sheeple have been told that Mom needs a 400 hp, 5000 lb SUV to run Johnny to soccer practice. Now people are waking up (a little) and looking for fuel economy, and looking (as always) to the imports. Honda, Toyota and Nissan don't build small cars as a sideline because the gov't tells them to, they build 'em because that's what sells in the home market. And they're damn good at it. How many Tundras do you think they sell in Japan?

Anyone notice how fuel prices dropped after the election? I think somebody's scared of Obama's alternative-energy promise. Cheap gas for 8 years means those plans won't get off the ground. And we'll be buying Escalades again.

Should we bail them out? No, and we shouldn't bail out the banks either. Once the free money starts to flow, everybody's going to want a share. Where do I sign up?

bob1961 12-08-2008 06:00 AM

no i don't think so, they should get rid of the head CEO's that let the big three get this far into trouble....i've been doing some reading on the auto makers emplyee benifits they get  ....OMG, there's half there problem now, the other half is the CEO's...............bob
