inserting a "squared symbol"

I'm emailing a friend and need to put the mathmatical "squared" symbol in and can't figure out how to do it.Like area of a circle is 3.14(Radius)squared.I'm using XP if that helps.
Thanks in advance

Like this: E=mc² ?

Hold down ALT button and type 0178 and then let go of alt.

And if anything, go to the Start Menu> Accessories> System Tools> Character Map

You can find all the funny little characters there and just copy them.

Yeah, it's funny how one little thing like a superscript 2 vs. a standard number 2 in the same position after the R makes the difference whether you find the area or the circumference :)
