Default So... What made you decide to...

Build your crawler how you built it? Just wondering. Also, if you were to build another, what would you change? I think this could be interesting.

I myself am looking into building something new. Thinking of making something nitro powered to show that you can make a nitro crawl as good as an electric. I think it would make for a good challenge.

i change lots of things, mainly axles my truck hasnt stayed the same for more than 2 weeks so far it is getting better every time.

as for nitro crawling go 4stroke and build a manual clutch out of a differential or old tranny id imagine it would be MUCH better than that
centrifugal junk not to mention more fun.i was building one out of an entire gt tranny pretty simple and it did work just needed improvements and some time.

theres more info on this in http://www.rccrawler.com/postt821.html

Good luck making a nitro be as smooth as an electric with a Novak super rooster ESC.

Why nitro anyway? It not like you will get longer run times and that would be one of the only reasons to go nitro. Also the exaust from a couple nitro crawlers in one area would be nice. 8O

I'd make it lighter and have a lower CG. Also I'd make the links beefier. Maybe 8-32 rod or soimething like that.

For my TLT, I'd lower the tranny. I'd aslo put 4 cells on the front axle and 2 on the back.

I like challenges. Nitro would give me that challenge.

I am thinking a Magnum XL-30 four stroke with a custom e-maxx trans converted to forward/reverse instead of a 2 speed, Mad Force axles, Jumbos on Hot Bodies rims. I think it would make for a sweet realistic crawler. Just tossing around ideas.

I'm tinkering with a Mad Force off and on, I just like the noise...I doubt that will ever be a better crawler than my TXT or Clods but its fun tryin'

Don't get me wrong... I LOVE gas powered anything. Its just the sound of the motor running and working on the engines as well.

I was thinking about being competitive, and not thinking the pure fun factor of a gas crawler.

"Crap, I broke this... How can I fix it?"
*Improve stock chassis*
"hmm, I can't improve the stock chassis more... I need to make a new chassis"
*makes new chassis*
"This sucks, I should do this"
*does that*
"Thats ok, but I need to change this"
*does that*

Something like that

I'm building a different one now; I'm making it more scale, heavier, longer, bigger, etc

Nitro would be fun with a heinous amount of gear reduction (HEINOUS) and then just locking up the clutch fully. That way with the engine at an idle, it could be just BARELY creeping along. That or make a nuetral somehow, and a locked up clutch.

I built my TJ-10 for the scale look and great funtion, and if you scale back to 1:1 off your modle once you will go thats burl.

I have a few in mind. One will be a cheapstarter for show.
I also want a 2.2 unlimited buggy and a big wheel like none other to date so far. I like function by desighn, and there is alot of it to be had in this hobby like no other!!!!!!

Thats what I was thinking I could do with the modded E-maxx trans. Use a 4 channel surface radio with the shift gate, middle is neutral, then one side is forward, other reverse. It would be geared way down, so shifting at idle wouldn't be a problem. My thoughts were to have the engine spin a jackshaft then the spur on the trans, so I could gear it low before the trans to slow down the gears inside at idle. I think it would work, just need to decide if its worth the time to do.

Other thing I would have to take care of is engine cooling, but I was thinking I could run a mechainical fan off the jackshaft since it will always be spinning. Kyosho has a great unit from their 4 stroke touring car.

i have a mad force and am 4 linking it right now and for cooling i just mounted an electic fan in the rear body post area that blows on the heat sink, the emaxx trann sounds like a sweet idea how would we do that with our 3 speed tranny's??? pm or email me at pooldude777rws@yahoo.com

Doing a little math... (see kids, it is important)

If I run a 15t pinions and 72t spurs here is what I am looking at for reduction.

Engine can idle at 2,000 RPM.
Each gear set drops rpm by 4.8
So after the first gear set, I am turning 416.66 RPM's
After the second, I am turning the input shaft on the transmission 86.80 RPM's.

Thats slow enough I can shift the trans without damage since the engine will have no clutch. Now I suppose your going to ask how I plan on stopping. Well, I am going to make a servo put the brakes on when the shift servo is in the neutral position. For the radio, I will be using a XR3 or MX3, since they are set up for a 3 position for the 3rd channel, ie. forward, neutral, and reverse.

Top speed:
WOT engine rpm's are 11,000 rpm's
After total gear drop the input shaft will spin 477.30 RPM's.

Then you have to figure the second gear drop (thats what the trans gearing will be) and then the axle ratio (not sure on axles yet) then tire size (I plan on big tires, like Jumbos or Hot Bodies)

So I think its possible to make a good nitro crawler. Guess I better do it now.
