Thought I would have a little fun with this... 2001 2wd f150 extended cab 4.6l v8 k&n cold air intake 235/75/r16 Yokohama Geolander AT's I generally have a 16mpg average but thats a combo of free open road and sitting in traffic driving When I got off the tollway this morning the gas light came on, Im at 390 miles for the tank. I checked the fuel log and the most miles I have ever driven on a tank was 391. Its 13 miles to the gas station by home... 9 of these miles is road construction tollway where I will be lucky to get over 20mph... it will most likely take 30mins to drive the 13 miles... so lets hear the opinions/votes.

Not realllly sure, traffic was a nightmare so I wasnt watching it. My guess is it came on about 387 or so as that would have been the last time I checked the gauges before the ramp.

You should make it especially if you are easy on the pedal. Fords fuel light is pretty conservative and usually leaves you 50 miles or so of fuel when the light comes on. Running the tank that low is hard on the fuel pump though because the fuel helps to keep the pump cool. Idling the truck will probably use 1-1.5 gph of fuel. You'll get better mph not running the A/C. Last edited by dkf; 08-21-2009 at 11:34 AM.

You'll make it. You've easily got at least a gallon left, probably more, when the light comes on. I drove over 30 miles in New Mexico in the middle of the night with my gas light in my 4x4 Chevy before I found a gas station.

In your model F15, ford throws the light on when there is approx 1.5 gallons left, so you should make it fine. On the other hand, that depends on traffic and whether or not there is alot of uphills, if you are towing anythinig and how heavy it is, and whether or not you have a head or tail wind. Good luck, and post pics when you are stuck on the side of the road... it'll be good for a laugh

reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where they want to see how far they can make it when the gas light comes on during the dealership test drive I could tell you go for it but, I can't be much of a help, I've gone from New Haven to my home about close to 50 miles away and then drove around part of the next day with my gas light on, but I've got a gas sipping VW. My wife has the same engine in her car and it always asking if she should get gas yet and its like a 1/3 tank left. I tell her to wait, I can drive around for days on a 1/3 tank.

Get the gas life is just to short to spend any time sitting on the side of the road in traffic let alone putting your wife on the road to face rush hour.
