Ford Escort GT

Has anyone owned one? My first car was a 95 LX and that was a great grocery getter. Now that I am going back to school and will need to travel 45 minutes each way, I don't want to rack up any km's on my Saab and need a good winter beater. Any kind of advice regarding these would help.

EeePee 09-02-2009 07:19 PM

Uh, it's a piece of crap. :ror:

How about a mid 90s Honda?

marmech 09-02-2009 07:30 PM

Are you sure? This has the 1.8 DOHC Mazda engine, no 1.9 garbage. Honda would probably be my third choice behind a Swift. The last Honda I owned was like a titanium brick, strong as hell, reliable, but just so bland to drive.

Might help, but the rest of the car is junk. Here in the States it was seriously a bottom rung econobox, outclassed by everything pretty much.

The Escort GT you speak of is basically a Mazda Protege.... I owned one and back in '98 I traded it in for a 1998 Honda Civic EX (Vtec) coupe....
Go with a Honda like EeePee suggested....

marmech 09-02-2009 07:42 PM

So much hate, I guess this is why you ask questions. I will include Hondas in my search, but if I do get one, I don't care what you say... I AM NOT GELLING MY HAIR AND WEARING SALMON PINK GOLF SHIRTS WITH THE COLLARS FLIPPED.

Honda makes a great car, if you can find a good one it'll be worth it. The corolla is also a decent car, but my experience is that they don't stand up to hard driving, I've seen several high school kids blow up late 90's corolla motors. One threw a rod out the side and took a chunk of the trans bellhousing with it"thumbsup"

I'm not sure how common they are up in Canada, but don't overlook subaru. They get decent gas millage, they're surprisingly reliable and the AWD makes for a great winter basher. Sure, they don't get quite as good gas millage as a FWD would, but they're worth looking into. If you don't mind looking like a lesbian hippy.

I know, Honda makes a good automatron. The one I owned was a good "vehicle", but I am looking for something with a bit of zest like a bit of lemon peel. I love your suggestion of a Subaru, they are pretty popular up here and probably quite a few older ones going for cheap. Damned craigslist... too many options.

Crawlin4fun 09-02-2009 08:29 PM

Find yourself a nice old Rolls-Kahardly

montana.matt 09-02-2009 08:35 PM

No hating here. I owned a Ford Escort GT and Civic Ex and the fit, finish and quality of the Honda was far superior to the Ford....
If you end up with the Escort, carry plenty of Rain X with you.... My windshield wipers took a dump on me one winter:lol:

my old girlfriend had an 89 escort gt. ( god bless the now turned lez, yes and she drives a subaru )

it had 289,000 miles on it and was only on it's second clutch.
we drove it till 314,000 and traded it in on a sonoma.

my cousin had a honda that lasted 150,000 miles.

it's all in how you drive it. "thumbsup"

EeePee 09-02-2009 09:15 PM

So drive it like a lezbo?

supercrawlerfreak 09-02-2009 09:15 PM

Just so happens I currently drive a 2001 Civic LX, the 2nd Honda Ive ever owned. I had a lot of differet vehicles over the years so I feel like I can give a fair review of car. I got this thing at 77k miles and it now has 96k, and so far so good. Havent had to replae anything really other than HL bulbs and a couple of tires. Its a 5sp and gets around 400-450 miles on a tank.

I test drove a early 90's Escort GT about a decade ago. My Civic has way more "zip" than that thing did, and Ive got a low end. Get an EX if you want something "fun" to drive.

This escort GT Looks like the the 1.8lt ghia edition we had around here. Worthless POS in my opinion when one could spend 2million drachmas (pre euro currency ~6000euro) and get a cosworth which was only 200cc more. A blast of a car to drive, it took a lot of nerve to beat that 4wd.
I own a Honda too and the last thing I could say is that it's bland.

Pete from Houston 09-03-2009 08:42 AM

If you're looking for something along the lines of the Escort GT, consider a 2dr Dodge Neon with the DOHC engine and 5 speed. They're cheaper to work on than Hondas and are very popular in SCCA grassroots racing events.

My '98 went 250+K on the 2.0 with minimal upkeep. I replaced the 2.0 with a 2.4 Stratus motor because I got a screaming deal on the 2.4, but the 2.0 is in a different car now and still going strong.
