Got a few pictures of front wings from Quali yesterday. Quite the insanity. Seriously. Look at those things. Totally different from each other. All within tenths of each other. All fast as hell. Amazing stuff. And Lewis... |

It was at point were it was impossible for Nico to "be responding". He had been "responding" the whole lap. He was pushing the entire time! Meh, whatever. Last edited by EeePee; 07-27-2014 at 01:29 PM. |

You have to give it to Alonso. I was an Alonso fan back in 2005-2006, until about three years ago, I'll admit that I was just watching the recaps on-line and looking at the point standings. I think there are a lot of good drivers in the field, but Alonso is a RACER. No excessive whining, no tweeting telemetry data, able to drive around the shortcomings of a car and be able to at put up a fight with what he's got. |

He whines a little bit. Then the boss yells at him. I think he's the best driver in the field. And has been for a while. |

| Re: PeePee's F1 thread He's matured a lot I the last year or so....I was impressed with his drive and Lewis'...pit lane to podium, pretty impressive. The last 6 laps was why I watch F1....lots of fun watching Ricardo, the man . One of the best races of the year so far

Yes he has. There was some, luck of the safety car in there for RIC. They also say when HAM didn't let ROS by, that ruined his race. Yeah, so? My favorite part I think was Vettel spinning out. But man, is he lucky not to hit anything! He's got to be pretty pissed off at himself, especially with RIC winning. Last edited by EeePee; 07-28-2014 at 10:09 PM. |

ROS was on a three stop strategy. HAM was on a two.

I'm not sure how that changes anything with 5-6 laps to go. Remember that you gotta break stuff down for me sometimes. | |

Dang, I hoped someone else would have chimed in, but I could understand why no one has. It's harder to describe even the basics more so than I thought, but I'll try. If nothing else, we know the tire types drivers get to use per race are of different compounds. They have to use two compounds. A softer, stickier, so assume faster tire but faster to wear out tire and one that is harder, slower but lasts longer. Take two cars that are exactly identical down to the lap times. Make them pit at the same time and we should expect the same exact result in the end of the race. That's never the case in real life. When do you pit a car? When the lap times are not as fast as going to the other (usually) harder tire. So, put on a fresh harder tire and go faster than a worn out set of softer tires. Call that a one stop strategy. The window in which to change to the other tire is a little more open than a strategy that has one pitting more than once. Remember, we're battling for tenths of a second. Two stop strategy still uses two tire compounds but obviously, there's a choice as to which one you use twice. Soft, soft then hard? Sprint, sprint, cruise? Sprint, cruise, sprint? That may read weird as it appears there's three stops, but realize you start on a tire, then make two stops afterwards. So now, things are getting a little more complicated as to when you stop, or how long you stay out. Nevermind what they call the "undercut", which refers to coming in maybe 1 lap before anyone expected you to be coming in, to try to be faster (and undercut the guy that's been blocking you for the last 5 laps cause you're faster than him) with fresher tires. Three stop strategy still uses two tire compounds but now you have more choices (assuming you have all the tires left from the prior days) as how to be faster than the guys on one or two stoppers. Ideally, you do three fast sprints on softs, then change near the end (or for some short duration) to the harder tire to finish. What this accomplishes is faster, shorter stints on fresher tires. And if implemented correctly, the faster shorter stints will take less time overall than coming in to the pits fewer times. I think I can recall most of the race and maybe use HAM and ROS as an example. None of it is really guesswork, most of it is planned out (by a computer even) and includes what to do in different scenarios. HAM had to play a serious game of catch up as he started from the pit lane, so there's no way he would (theoretically in a perfect world) catch ROS. ROS was on a three stop from the start because the Mercs are blazing fast. Because they're so fast they're gonna have quicker times. Make up the time on the track and not in the pits. I think they were banking on HAM to fly through the field and deal with crappier tires for longer stints, and if he could, there'd be no need to bring him in for a third stop, so he'd make up some time there also. ROS having fresher tires at that moment when MERC told HAM to let ROS by was strictly for the better placement of the team as he had times to finish on the podium, more so than HAM's times. But as HAM is, he said no chance, we're racing for a Championship here! That's pretty much disobeying team orders, but that happens. MERC sees it as they could have had both cars higher up in the Constructor's Points. In the end, RIC was on fresh tires, ALO and HAM had no chance because their tires were beat. At this level, you can almost say it was as simple as that. But it wasn't. The safety car and bad timing for a few really paid off in the end for the guys at the top. I bet this race was a strategists nightmare. And there was rain! Best race of the year so far probably. Have I answered anything? I gotta stop for now in case I'm rambling, or not making any sense. So feel free to let me know. Oh, and remember, this is over about a 70 lap time span. Last edited by EeePee; 07-29-2014 at 04:40 PM. |

| Re: PeePee's F1 thread I'd also like to add that often the fastest lap of the day comes on the last lap. Least amount of fuel/weight in the car and fresher tires is the one that flies to FTD. Just like RIC did at this one getting by two past Champions.

Yeah. Tell a guy who has fought his ass off from the absolute bottom to let someone pass. lol wut I was also under the impression that the order came later in the race with 5-6 laps, and not 20. I can understand the reasoning from both sides. But I gotta side with my English bro. |

Bruno Senna's post race analysis might really clear up some Safety Car stuff, if you got that. He shows who got screwed by it, and who benefitted by it.
