Thanks, guys. Quote:
Started the day by taking the kids mountain biking - something they both said they wanted to do today. Jeff is 5 and has a Haro X16 that he rides. 16" tires, freewheel hub, rear caliper brakes. Megan is 8 and has a Haro Flightline. 24" girls mountain bike. I went out on my 29er. Unloaded the bikes, got our gear on, and I started leading us from the parking lot to the trailhead. From where we were parked there was a slight downhill section in the asphalt. Nothing long, but steep. I'm up front, Megan following me, and Jeff behind her. I get to the trailhead and stop, Megan stops, and Jeff is coming down the hill HAULING ASS. I couldn't speak fast enough. Megan was faster and said "Brakes!" but it was too late. Jeff went down, held on to the bike, and the two of them were now hauling ass sliding across the grass. Jeff was on his back with the bike on top of him. In his path of travel was a drainage ditch about a foot and a half across and a foot deep. He was moving so fast that the tangled mess of Jeff+bike CLEARED that ditch and he continued on. Somehow he ended up on top of the bike and still sliding. Not quite sure how that happened. Did I mention that the kid was HAULING ASS? He passed over the ditch, back onto the grass and kept sliding. He finally stopped when he hit the front wheel of my 29er. He hit my bike so hard that it knocked my front wheel out of line with my handlebars. So he's obviously in a bit of pain, Megan and I are in that in-between mode of shock and laughter, and I asked him if he was OK. He untangles himself from the bike, stands up with an "Owww...", walks three of four steps to the other side of the trail, and sits back down to look at the scrapes and all. He grunts, "Yeah." "Why didn't you use your brakes?" More grunting/moaning as he speaks, "I forgot." "You going to forget again?" Grunting, "No." So he gets up, picks up his bike, and started checking it out to see if it was messed up. I straightened his bars/front tire and he was ready to continue on. It was his first time on a trail so I was proud that he wanted to go on after such a spectacular crash. So we go on and again Megan and I went ahead a little bit then we stopped to wait for him. We saw him coming down the trail and he dropped over a tree root that was about six inches in diameter. "OWWW!!!...mumble, mumble" I couldn't understand what he had said so I asked Megan - who was laughing. "Megan, what'd Jeff say?" "He said 'OWWW MY NUTS!'" I don't think I've ever laughed so hard in such a short about of time. I KNOW I heard an "OH SHIT!" or two come from Jeff today on other parts of the trail. "Megan, what'd he say?" "I don't know." (covering for him) My stomach hurt from laughter then and I was just typing this. Last edited by JasonInAugusta; 08-21-2010 at 07:15 PM. | |
