| Volvo Laplander with PTO driven trailer build
Hello all! I am new here to the forum and crawling but had quite a few RC cars and boats when I was younger. Alot has happened since then though! Originally from Doylestown, PA I have been living in Stockholm Sweden for the last 13 years. Since moving here I have become quite involved in the 1:1 off-road scene. My vehicle of choice is a 1969 Volvo Laplander, a former Swedish military 4x4. right now I am in the process of totally renovating it. You can follow that progress here. http://www.soost.com/valpen Here she is in Rondane Norway 2 years ago before I added my Front Runner roofrack and VisionX lighting. Since alot has happened I really do not know what there are for options. Who's frame I should base my build on? Should I have a frame built? Axels? Transmissions? What scale? Anyone that can make me a fantastic quality hard body.....? I think you get the idea. Here are the measurements. What will make this build more special and maybe even a little complicated is that I also want to make a copy of my PTO driven trailer! To best see what I mean you can see it in action here. (note: the truck the trailer is connected to is a friends since mine is being renovated. his truck is lacking a lot of horsepower due to a tried engine and carburetor) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4JwHQ0PbAU They trailer is from Volvo. What they did was to take the same frame as my truck, cut is in half leaving the rear axel. They then added a PTO through the truck rear bumper to then connect it to another transfer case on the trailer to then drive the trailer axel. This giving me a 6x6 when I wish to engage the the trailer. The rear axel and the trailer axel are both limited slip diffs and the trucks front axel now has a Detroit LockRight Locker. In the next pic you can see how the power is tranferred via the blackened parts. Body pics She looks top heavy but I have driven at 38 degress without laying on my side! One last pic and that is of the frame The part of the frame at the bottom of the pic is the front end of the truck. So as far as my RC build: Do I base my build on an existing product/frame/kit that someone sells? I would like to have the final result as close to my 1:1 as possible. My truck has leaf springs so I would like this build to have it as well. Then there is the PTO on the back of the truck. How should I solve this? Looking around I have seen some parts I would really like to have in this build. Remote controlled locking diffs. But does anyone make portal conversions to them? 1.9 or 2.2? DIG? What's that? I best let you guys come with some comments before I barf more questions. /Tedd Last edited by Fotovalpen; 11-11-2009 at 05:31 PM. Reason: update |

looking at that frame in the picture I would say best bet is building it off a Tamiya Hilift kit or using the frame rails from a Semi Truck kit if the wb is better.

Is it possible to buy that frame as a replacement without having to buy the entire truck kit?

BUT! Maybe I can at least have portals on my RC version? I was in on the German site but I don't know any German. Do they have axels though for the 1/10 and 1/8 scale?

We have a holiday home in Sweden (near Jönköping) and I hope someday I will have a C303 there as my "holiday car". That's why I am a bit into this stuff. Regarding Bamatech: I think they can make the 1:10-Axles on request. No idea on the pricing. Maybe Losi MRC-Axles plus 3racing Portals for the Axial AX10 could be an alternative? ...but they lack the PTO and I do not know if it is possible to convert this. |

Subscribed!! Cool ideas!! Interesting truck. With a bit more HP, would be a neat little traveler. Were the original motors, 4cy, laying on their sides? |

The original engine was a 1,8 liter 4cyl. Volvo gas engine called B18. I have since upgraded to the 2 liter B20. Here you can see some pics of it sitting in the frame. It sits vertically. http://www.soost.com/valpen/Fotovalp...ing_Day_1.html Info on the engines. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_B20_engine The engine were from the beginning designed by an engine designer to be a diesel. Volvo saw the potentials of the design to be reliable and strong, bought the guys and designs and made it a gas engine instead. I have increased the hp of mine to approx. 97 hp and use a Weber 32/36 DGV carburetor. When done I will be using the truck as an Overland Expedition vehicle.

Reading swedish works quite well... My spoken swedish shows huge potential for improvement. I need more practice. I'll have a look at the terrängbil forum. |

Until I see what frame, axels and suspension I will use I have been playing around with the drive train. Has anyone here experience with this 3 speed 2WD engagable 4WD tranny? http://www.rc4wdstore.com/2/product_...roducts_id=281 Experience with the Killer case anyone? http://www.rc4wdstore.com/2/product_...roducts_id=545 Since I want this build to be as close to my 1:1.... Here's what I'm thinking. - Use the 3 speed tranny's full time drive to drive the Killer case. - The Killer case will then supply both front and rear axels with full time 4WD. - Then the engagable/disengagble outlet can be used for the trailer! Just as with my 1:1 I can engage and disengage it from the cab. What do you think? |

If you can tear apart a 1:1 then you should have no problem with a scaler. That frame is a straight boxed frame and would be no problem, braze on a few crossmembers and you are set to go.

Yes. I am playing with this idea. But I do not have the tooling to due this. My 1:1 is big but even there I have found different channels that have what I need so I do not have to invest in tooling. Right now I am looking more or less at all of RC4WD's products. First would be to build on their Rapture frame. http://http://www.rc4wdstore.com/2/p...roducts_id=820 |

Don't know if you've seen this, but I bet you could do something similar 2-speed tranny with PTO! Project BBW: Big Burly Winch The RC4WD 3 speed is probably really heavy, which will hurt performance. The highlift trans is still heavy, but probably less so. That's a sweet laplander |

hi! I plan to build a Volvo L3314 too, and I just found your thread. I haven't started building yet, still need some more styrene. I figured that 1/7,25 scale will fit my chassis perfectly. I'm going to make a thread on the forum when I start building |

it is great that this thread has popped up. i think i have my next project idea! i'm guessing that nobody makes a 1/10 body like this, right? i love the looks of this truck and want one. the body may be the last part of the project. i'm really excited about the idea of the PTO driven trailer. lots of mechanics to work out. |
