Linksys WRT54G

Linksys is owned by Cisco, and there are TONS of modified Firmwares available for tweaking/securing this router.

I personally like both Netear and Belkin, have great results from both.

I don't like Linksys at all. Seems like they don't last very long.

I have always had good luck with D-link and Airlink+. The only brand I have had problems with in the past is Linksys. I usually just buy what is on sale.

I went through 3 wrt54g linksys ones in the last year, and my sister went through 2, they are junk.

Badger reccommended Belkin to me, and so far it has been much better than the linksys ones. I get a lot better range with it as well.

I've had a linksys wrt54g for about 2 years now, but it just crapped out on me yesterday. It worked fine until then. The customer service seems pretty good though as they said they would send a replacement for it. Just my two cents on that, but the other brands seem to have a better review.

D-Link makes high quality routers, cant go wrong with that. The others I havent used and I wont say anything about them :D

Linksys....Never had any problems and have plenty of options for security. THe only time I had one take a dump was after someone spilled a glass of wine on it.
and like CronusTRD said they are owned by cisco, so you get the same support.

I've had Linksys for over two years, no problems. D-link before that. It's sorta like the GM vs Ford vs Mopar thing.

On the 2nd computer would you fellas recomend putting a PCI type wireless card or a wireless USB conecter....

im thinking the pci would probably be better since it's fixed in the computer and cant be bumped out plus anything transferring usb is slow as hell even with USB 2.0..

Im still looking :)

thanks guys

get a pci card. usb will be a bottleneck for your internet connection.

This is not true. USB 1.1 is 11 megabits, or 11,000 K. USB 2.0 is 480 megabit, or 480,000 K. There is no way you will max out either with your internet connection. The fastest home internet connection I have seen in the states has been 6 megabit...

Just from my experience in this house, if you have old plaster walls, forget about wireless!

JasonInAugusta 12-19-2005 09:36 PM

I've been running a Linksys BEFW11S4 for years.

Haven't had a problem with it.

Should probably upgrade to a faster router though.

I just like being able to reply to all you clowns from my laptop while I am sitting on the ****ter :flipoff:

Well I ended up buying the "Belkin - Wireless-G Plus MIMO Router" and "Belkin - High-Speed Wireless-G Plus Desktop Card"

both are rated at 2.4Ghz the pci card at 125mbs and the router at 108mbs with about 1000' range...

And i believe the router comes with some hardwired firewall plus I have a software firwall so should probably be set...

One more question have you fellas that have had a wireless network ever had a problem with jack asses breaking into your network and doing damage to your PC's?

if you dont lock your wireless down you will run the chance of someone using your network. If they don't use it to do illegal things they still can eat up your bandwidth and cause you to have slower speeds.

Lock it down...its easy.

donkeykong 12-20-2005 09:42 AM

The problem is not them getting in and messing up your computer but as stated above getting in and using your internet access to do things that they dont want to do on there own connection and eating up all your bandwidth. It isnt hard to lock it down just fallow the security wizard that is usually supplied and your done.

FrankyRizzo 12-20-2005 09:53 AM

Just allow it access to your mac address and don't have it broadcast your ID.
