| The R Word......
March 3 is the day to “help eliminate the use of the ‘r-word’ in everyday speech”. Our son Blake has Down syndrome. When people use the word 'retard' they directly make reference (in a derogatory fashion) to our precious boy and others who have been blessed with an extra 21st chromosome or have an intellectual disability. SPREAD THE WORD TO END THE WORD! http://www.r-word.org :-P |

Sorry but I'll have to use it, retards are those who use this word in a demeaning way, just because they are too slow to understand the consequence of the word itself to kids and parents alike. Having volunteered the past 15+ years for autistic kids, I get infuriated when I hear (or read) "hey retard". Rant over. Sorry. |

I couldnt agree more with ya mad force. I used to work with a guy with down syndrome. He's still my buddy to this day and probably one of the best guys i know. I think its ignorant for people to even use the r word. |

My mom and pop are foster caretakers for Mentally challenged for the past 24yrs. I took one of them to the preseason packers game this past year and she had the time of her life. I got tears in my eyes to see her wide smile.

Main Entry: 1re·tard Pronunciation: \ri-ˈtärd\ Function: verb Etymology: Middle English, from Anglo-French or Latin; Anglo-French retarder, from Latin retardare, from re- + tardus slow Date: 15th century transitive verb 1 : to slow up especially by preventing or hindering advance or accomplishment : impede 2 : to delay academic progress by failure to promoteintransitive verb If people used this word right it wouldn't be derogatory, but like many words, its slang meaning is used in a negative context. I couldn't agree with this thread more. I to have a son and brother in law of whom is LD/DD. I hate how this word is used in the day to day...hardly ever used in its proper context. What's sad is we have relatives who throw this word around like it's nothing. I would love nothing more than to see this "R word" disappear. Thanks for posting this |

People are just way to sensitive these days. This would be like the same as me asking people to stop using the word fat just because I'm fat and it happens to offend me. (I am fat, and it doesn't offend me but you get the point) I am a guilty party on the subject but when I use the "r" word I'm not talking about people with down syndrome. I use the "r" word as a harsher way of calling my buddies "slow". Flame on, I don't care, I have thick enough skin that nothing you say or call me will affect me in any other way than amusement. |

No flaming needed....your opinion is your opinion. And maybe one day it will change. I myself never realized my hair would stand up on end hearing the R word, until my son was born with Down syndrome. |

I myself do nothave a mentally or physically challange kid (I do not have any kids) but I do have a friend whom has a 12 year old daughter with Down Syndrome and I feel for her everytime I here the "R" word. I may see here once every couple years due to my friend getting a divorce and the mother living in another state, but, it makes me smile when she sees me. She come running and gives me a hug and remebers my name. I can see how it affects people with direct relationships with mentally retarded people. | |
