To us civvies, it has tracks only, so it seems like a tank. Thanks for the clarification though. :thumbsup

As a civ, it doesnt have a long pronounced barrel, so it's in a grey area of being a tank. However, I'd likely call it a tank in conversation.

A tank must have a gun to be called a tank? Serious question from a non-military guy who would've called all of the above "some sort of tank".

Tank with a turret that rotates 360 degrees is a tank or like the Bradley, an FAV (Fast Attack Vehicle).

Self-Propelled Artillery is mounted on tracks, NOT a tank, because gun only has limited rotation once gun is set, as it has spades in the rear that dig in to "set" the artillery piece. The guns can fire in any direction, but has to be reset once entire howitzer rotates on tracks.

Tracked APC's (Armored Personnel Carriers), sometimes have small automatic arms, and up to 40mm cannons on them, but still considered an APC, even though the area inside where the personnel would ride is an entire magazine. Quad 50 AA batteries were usually mounted on APC's also.

To be fair, this was in my post in reply about tanks floating.

"APC I think is the proper term, but it's still a tank derivative."

Plenty of time to regret going down, which i also think he did.
That jump damn near killed him, totally missing his target as he was supposed to land in the water where the bubbles are to make the landing less hard.

Nope, the bubbly areas are full or cavitation, i.e. air and won't slow your descent enough. Not to mention the chance of getting caught in a hydraulic. What you do need for high diving/jumping is ripples on the water to help break the surface tension, which the falls were already providing. That's why most high dive expos and competitions have sprinklers spraying on the surface of the pool. It was a sponsored jump by Red Bull, and the guy is a pro.

Sorry if it sounding like I was yelling/ talking down to anyone, that was definitely not the case. As always, the sarcasm is hard to type and convey properly in a post.
The AAV's are unique to the Marine Corps amphibious assault capabilities, it's our specialty! The AAVP7 has the weapons station, there's a C variant AAVC7 which is a comm operations based vehicle, it only used a M60 since that vehicle was usually far away from where the grunts get dropped off at. Then there's the AAVR variant, the recovery vehicle. Same deal, it carried a M60 but didn't even have a turret hatch, there's a crane that takes up that spot.

Great pic that I found of the R next to a C variant.

To me, a tank has a huge main gun, usually in access of 100mm diameter and has heavy armor plating and usually some type of reactive armor plating to offset a direct hit from a RPG , sagger or other anti-tank weapon. Some tanks could be outfitted with a deep water fording kit, but that just allowed it to drive on the bottom of a shallow lake. There are definite limitations on how deep a tank can ford some water because tanks don't float. Just too damn heavy and don't have a hull shape that lends itself to buoyancy.

^^LOL HALO!

Nah, I never thought you were talking to me at least. And you're right, tone doesn't come across in email/text/forum posts. I'm always up for learning, and that's a cool shot. I wanna drive one of the amphibious ones, that's bad ass!!
