Waste of space assumes that available space is limited...?

You can tell it is from a telescope....specifically from a scope called a "Newtonian Cassegrain"....aka, reflecting telescope. The vertical and longitudinal lines emanating from the stars give it away. Those lines are caused by the supports for the secondary mirror in the scope. You can see the black supports in this image of the telescope:

If you have the ability to get Podcasts, you need to check out the Hubblecast and the ESOcast.

You will be amazed.

If you can see stars from your location, go out one night and lay on your back for about twenty minutes and see how many satellites are visible. If the Space Station is in the right orbit for your vantage point, it will stick out like a sore thumb.

Indeed! This will tell/show you were the 'Station is...

And with this one, you can see a 3d tracking image of 900 orbiting satellites. There's a lot crap up there!

Location of the Hubble.

I knew there were a lot, but I didn't know that there were some that far out.

And whats with the eliptical orbits that a few of them have?

I have a few theories:
1.) So the Russians can't shoot them. We can't allow TV/video broadcasts to be interrupted. It's a threat to democracy and the Media!
2.)The satellites can't crash back into the Earth spewing nuclear material.
3.) Somebody in squintland made a boo-boo and put it in wrong orbit.
4.) Gravity.

I'm gonna keep this going. A new Esocast Podcast popped up in iTunes today, so I thought I'd share.

Quote:
For the first time, astronomers have been able to directly follow the motion of an exoplanet as it moves to the other side of its host star.
Here's the video: http://www.eso.org/public/videos/eso1024a/

And here's the link to the Hubble info and videos.

That's much cooler than the way they used to observe planets on other solar systems....but watching the host star wobble and trying to calculate the mass of the planet that could not be seen.

Awesome post Tom. I always think of this when anyone mentions outer space.
