Don't feel bad, according to the article I read in the paper this morning, that rover was originally designed to only run for 3 months. It lasted 15 yrs.

Yes indeed.
Both of the rovers did way more than was planned for, i think the same was the case for the Hubble telescope.

Now if we could just get the same for our cars.

Every time i see those 2 boosters land i am like Duuuuuuuuuude
Still waiting for the day they land at the exact same time, though that will probably be a fluke.

I was reading an article yesterday about scientist being excited about finding several likely inhabitable planets relative close to our solar system. They defined "relatively close" as being between 20 - 30 light years away. This is interesting, but more or less useless for us, given that our fastest machines only move at a tiny fraction of light speed. To put it another way, light takes about 140 hours to get from our sun to the edge of our solar system, it took Voyager 2 about 40 years. Voyager 2 is moving at 35000mph, at that speed it will take 20,000 years to travel one light year...

So much for "relatively close".

"Ahead warp factor 6, Mr. Sulu". Okay, nothing to do with science but fun anyway.

There are scientist that say faster than light (FTL) or near FTL is theoretically possible. Of course, there are a couple if things we need to do to achieve it safely. One of the biggest is to figure out how to generate enough power to warp space-time. Second, figure out how to accelerate and decelerate safely (some theories say this is unnecessary because you are warping space-time and the vesicle isn't actually moving). Next you have to figure out how to compensate for the time dilation effect. And, how to correct for the color doppler shift, required, theoretically, to avoid hazards.

But, again, most of this is moot. Globally we are nowhere near being able to develop technologies that would allow for FTL travel. We need people in space, testing and developing technologies that would be come the building blocks of FTL travel. Trying to solve FTL with our current space programs would be like trying to break the sound barrier using pre Wright Brother era glider ran off of a little hill.

You ever read Enders game GS? The series may be right up your alley.

As far as time travel, I have a hard time with this one becuase the dimension of time is linear, I’d think. If we could travel faster than the speed of light it makes me wonder if we could ever recreate the past to “see” it happen again but as far as actually putting a body in the past and interacting with people of the past like we see in movies, I have a hard time wrapping my head around that one.

Nope, I have seen the movie, but people have told me that it did not do justice to the book. Actually, for pleasure reading, Ender's Game is kind of out of my niche, I am a big Steven King fan. Every now and again though, a book like Ender's game will catch my eye and I'll read it. With King, I like his writing style, and not so much the genre. I have tried reading Kootz, and I don't care for his writing style, and I find his books annoyingly predicable. With that, I also don't read many military books ether, Clancy bores the hell out of me, his is basically the Steinbeck of military story telling.

As far as time, goes, no, it is not linear, this is the time dilation effect, the closer to the speed of light you get, the slower time goes. This is one of the theories that Einstein postulated that has been proven. The computers on Earth orbit satellites have to have a time correction applied to them because they are moving so much faster than the Earth is, they lose a small fraction of time. This error isn't all that much, but if let go, it would throw of things that rely on precise timing like the GPS system.
