Default OK, you computer guys

OK, at work we have a computer that is old, but it serves our purpose of e-mail only. Trying to clean up some disk space and found the following when I went to search and typed in "*.pdf". It searched C drive only and came up with these files, there are 356 of these files (as well as some on C drive). I can open everyone of these files, but I can't move or delete them. They are files of a job we bid on. As you see, there is no Drive designated to them. Has anyone seen this before and how do you get rid of the files....and no reburning the computer is not a option. They weren't really good at keeping the disks and the windows disk is gone.

Soo, any thoughts on my problem??? and no, we can't purchase a new computer.

thanks

Not a big fan of XP's built in search. But to me it appears you have a 06.02.04 Splr-plnt dsgn etc folder somewhere and that's what it is showing. If you right click on the file you should have an 'Open Containing Folder' option.

You could also do a 'run' - launch command prompt - type 'cmd' and hit enter. Then type in 'cd \' and then do 'dir /a /s *.pdf |more' and see what comes up

soo I tried the "launch command prompt", opened the folder and tried to delete, this is what I got..and nothing was deleted.

Will try the DOS.

thanks for the reply Zac

This looks like those files are in a .ZIP file or anther type of archive file.

Search for 06.02.04 Splr-plnt dsgn dwgs.* and see what you find.

Zac, in DOS they didn't come up. now thats odd.

salmon..they are in a zip or so it seems, but I can't find "where" they are. I have deleted the zip file/folder..and I still can open these drawings. searched for "06.02.04 Splr-plnt dsgn dwgs.*" and came up with nothing.

thanks again for the responses.

In that folder, hit the Folder Up icon...then you should be able to see the zip file.

Also try right clicking and check the properties.

Ding.

That's what it looks like. They are in a "Compressed Folder" - aka, a zip file

Just remove the whole thing if you don't need it.

You sure you aren't seeing them in the recycle bin?

There's a chance that the windows file system is getting in your way. You could try loading up a linux rescue distro like Knoppix. It boots/runs from CD and IIRC the latest versions can read/write NTFS now. Then you can search the drive and try deleting without windows in the loop.

Knoppix is my preferred rescue distro so I'll talk to that one... It is a complete linux OS that boots and runs from CD. I've run it on several older machines to fix corrupted windows installations - I think one only had 256MB of RAM. I think you only need 10-20MB free, but I could be wrong.

I can't guarantee that it will work, but it's free and really handy to have around anyway, so it's worth a shot.

Btw, I've used it on machines that were over 10 yrs old (at the time) still running win95

It may not help your pdf problem... but try ccleaner

http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner

Once installed, under the clean button, hit the analyze button, skim through the files make sure there is nothing impotrtant, then hit run cleaner. The go to registry, hit scan for issues, then fix selected issues, then it will ask if you want to back up, say yes and put it somewhere where you will remmeber it.

This will clean up the computer alot, make it faster, and just a good general maintance. We even use it on out 64 bit, quad core, 8gb ram, 1 tb hd, computer. I have used it on old POS xp computers aswell, this is where this program really shines.
