That only works if they decide to rattle, which they do not always do.

Look at the bands on their tails. That is a pretty dead give away that they are Western Diamondbacks. I may be wrong but I couldn't find a single picture of a S. Pacific rattler with that characteristic.

Crotalus atrox only occurs in southeastern California. Given where he lives, and I am correct in that he was biking in Orange County (in a county park), theres no way it can be Crotalus atrox - I can am positive of that.

With that said, I must admit a grave error, bad, bad, bad, bad! If you only knew how bad.

I did not pay attention to the pictures very much, I looked at them again.
Thank you for pointing out the coon tail. That area is part of the edge of the red diamond rattlesnake. I just saw diamondback, and responded without looking at the tails. So we were both wrong. That species is Crotalus ruber.

HELL NO!!!! I wouldnt have gotten that close any day! I am terrified of snakes I dont care what kind it is. If I can see which way they are going I will go the other way. I know nature has a reason for everything and that without them rodents and other stuff would be everywhere but to me the only good snake is a DEAD snake.

Damn! In the video, that one guy tried passing and the snake got pissed at the interruption! I guess it's ok to look, but don't get close!

One thing about snakes, the don't typically bite humans unless given a reason.

That could be that you accidentally landed right on one in your travels, it freaked, then bit, or the most common is people being stupid and jacking with the snakes.

You don't fit into the snakes food chain, so it doesn't want to eat you. The snake realizes your are many multiple times it's size and honestly you scare the sh$t out of it. What it really wants is for you to go away or for it to be able to get the h3ll away from you. Either way it wants as much distance from you as possible.

A fear of snakes is not healthy, a respect and understanding of them is.

Either way nice shots and cool find!
