Default Laptop brands

Well i'l say right now, i'm 100% against HP. No chance in hell i'll consider it.

Anyways, currently what are the better laptop brands. I'd choose a nice sony, but compared to like a dell or something apples to apples, they're about 500 more. And its actually a gift my step dad wants to give my mom. So...price is probably more of a concern than brand loyalty.

If i had my choice for laptops at best buy (has to be locally)

Sony - VAIO F Series Laptop / Intel® Core™ i7 Processor / 16.4" Display - Black - VPCF236FM/B

but a nice dell

Dell - Inspiron Laptop / Intel® Core™ i7 Processor / 17.3" Display / 8GB Memory / 750GB Hard Drive - Diamond Black - I17RN-3530DBK

Its 90% a business computer for trucking invoicing. So 10 key is a must

So whats every's thoughts on brand?

have 2 toshibas here, not a hiccup on either of them. of course i ditch windows on the first power-up....have to say though that mine is the most durable laptop i've seen outside a lenovo or toughbook. been through hell and back and still sound. ma's is an L505 with the 10 key which we got for the exact same reason before dad died, and its a very solid machine as well.

Vaio is a POS. About as proprietary as a PC can get.

Dell's are great machines, for a business pc look at the lattitude line . Lenovo has nice business machines as well.

Toshiba has some nice machines too as does the above mentioned ASUS, but they are OEM home consumer machines.

If you can buy it at Best Buy it is not a business machine.

There are 3 grades of hardware as well when it comes to drives and other. Military Grade (obvious) - the best and nor available outside military.

There is enterprise grade which tests the 2nd highest. This grade of hardware will be in business PC's.

Then there is OEM... the rest of the crap that goes in consumer machines.

A consumer machine will have more bells and whistles than a business machine, the business machine has better guts.

At that price i'd go with the sony though. Sony is lighter and thinner too.

One thing thats popping about the asus though is the twin 7200rpm hd's BUT i don't think this will make a huge performance leap in buisness computing

Depending on how you set the raid up it could make a real performance difference. you could also use parity for data redundancy.

If price is an issue go with Dell or Toshiba.

Lenovo...nothing else is as good.

Then Toshiba

Then business level Dell's (not the ones you can buy at Best Buy, only online)

Then everything falls in the same just possibly going to last 2 years: Acer, Asus, Sony, HP, Home Dell...all crap.

I wasn't given a price limit. Mostly business use.

It's my step dad's Christmas gift to my mom. My mom does all the accounting for their trucking business (If anyone ever needs truck work in Colorado or surrounding states, LMK) (we have belly dump, and a flat bead for the semi and a dump truck, but my step dad has alot of contacts)

Asus, Samsung. Fry's Home Electronics | Computer Parts & Accessories, Software, Games, TVs, Cameras - Frys.com or TigerDirect.com - Computers, Computer Parts, Computer Components, Netbooks & Electronics

IBM/Lenovo is the worst POS I ever used/worked on.

I'm not a PC/tech kind of guy, but I can tell you that I've had great luck w/ my Toshiba Satellite. It's 7 years old now and still going strong. It still has windows XP which I wouldn't trade for anything except a MAC. You didn't mention MAC, are you not a fan of their products?

no chance in hell i'd consider an HP (compaq is the same garbage) or a dell, or a sony, or a eMachine.

I've had several Acers and been very happy with them (couple Toshiba's aswell and they would be my 2nd choice), I worked in a computer shop for years and thats what we sold cause they are an amazing value.

and wouldn't you know it, the majority of the computers in for repair were. HP's/Compaq, dells, sony's and eMachines

good luck on your hunt for a laptop, your on the right track now instead of going into a store and pointing at one, or letting some rookie "sales associate" talk you into something you don't need.

I doubt a mac will work with the windows type server that my mom runs quickbooks off of (she also works at a full time accounting office, so she runs off their server for everything business related)
