One from before a good percentage of you were born:

Eddie Vedder - Big Hard Sun

Now, Metallica has been brought up a couple of times. Need to reference back to Metal up Your Ass a.k.a. Kill 'Em All. These are the original cover songs that influenced Metallica in a big way in the early days. If I recall, these have been pulled off of recent re-releases of Kill 'Em All for whatever reason. Anyways:

Metallica - Am I Evil?

Metallica - Blitzkrieg

And of course Metallica's whole Garage Days Re-visited (not the re-revisited, the older one when Jason Newsted first joined the band, before Justice).

Nirvana is another favourite band of mine. They did a lot of cover songs. Not necessarily better, but brought recognition to a lot of songs that otherwise would have been unheard of. Will just post up one of the better one's to start:

Nirvana - Where did you sleep last night?

I've been watching Sons of Anarchy lately and there's tons of covers in there...

John the revelator cover by Curtis Stigers
Curtis Stigers & The Forest Rangers - John The Revelator - YouTube

House of the rising sun by the animals, such a solid tune, and I'm very weary of saying the covers are better, tough calls

but anyways:
The white buffalo & forest rangers cover:
The White Buffalo - The House of The Rising Sun (Sons of Anarchy Season 4 Finale Song) - YouTube

here's another great cover of that song by sinead oconnor:
Sinead O'Connor - The House of the Rising Sun - YouTube

Bird on a wire sung by Katey Sagal, chilling performance (Gemma / peggy from married with children), it's a cover of Leonard Cohen
KATEY SAGAL - BIRD ON A WIRE [***OFF SONS OF ANARCHY SEASON 3***] - YouTube

Battleme - Hey Hey, My My - cover of Neil Young
Battleme - Hey Hey, My My (Sons of Anarchy S03E13) - YouTube

Johnny Cash - Run on (by Elvis)
Johnny Cash - God's Gonna Cut You Down - YouTube

Actually, the Animals version is a cover They did such a good job of it, everyone assumed it was their song. Original was done by Leadbelly:

Another Leadbelly song cover is Black Betty by Ram Jam. Again, most people probably figured this was their song:

I almost forgot about Alien Ant Farm's cover of Michael Jackson - Smooth Criminal

EDIT: I guess BUBBA069 already posted it but I quit reading after the first couple, posting 33 covers at once is just too much......

One of my all time favorites, from an all time favorite album, from I band I don't care for, unless they're unplugged. And I don't really think it's better than David Bowie's, but possibly very close to equal. It gave me one of just a handful of musical moments I've had in my life when Cobain plays the solo. The combination of my mind state, stereo components and room synergy just WOWWED me. That was around 1996 or so, and I was about 21 years old. Still a favorite.
