Default I Need an iPhone Guru

I've been given two iPhone for a proiject I am working on. They need to be used as iPods and have no sim cards. I did a complete reset on one of them and now it is trying to find a cell network to complete the setup process. The other I have not reset but it won't let me get on the App Store with my sign on, I suppose because it does not match up with the phone iID info. I need to download a program called iPhly for this project.

Is there something I can do to get these phones functioning like iPods or do I have to take them to the Apple Store, God forbid? Can this even be done wiithout a sim card or is there a way program the things so I can get online from my wireless network?

I recently got rid of my iPhone so I have an App Store account but now it does not recognize my sign in attempts from these phones. I'm not trying anything illegal but I now feel like a criminal, stupid Apple. Stupid cell phones.

I'm pretty sure you need a sim card to operate anuy iphone. Best bet is to buy a pre-paid burner card. the sim doesn;'t ahve t obe active to work, so you could possibly find one in an old junker phone. Once in you should be able to use wi-fi to access the itunes store.

You will need to have them accessible to wifi to finish the setup (especially if it's needing to download the latest firmware package for whatever reason.

Once it gets beyond the initial setup stages, plug it into a computer with itunes and set it up as a new phone using your itunes login info. Once that happens, it should be usable without the cellular network. To turn off the cellular data network, go to:

Settings > General > Network

From there turn off the Cellular Data tab. With that it will only use and look for a wifi network to pull any data it needs.

You could also run it on "airplane mode" to avoid the cellur features.

Well, I got one of them working just fine. However, the one I did a complete reset to is not letting me get past the cell network search. I'm gonna try it with iTunes now and see what happens...that's a good idea right there!

That didn't work. iTunes tells me to install a sim card and try again. The phone is still trying to find a cell network in order to activate. I just want it to roll over and play dumb!

Damn. With all the talk about "rooting" and "jail breaking" and stuff, I thought there were more phone nerds around.

I had a 3G switched to Sprint for an Evo 4G. I did nothing to the original 3G other than turn off the cellular data and its been working as an iPod for 3 years now.

The one that's not working had a hard reset done on it. The other one is working fine.

Are the phones jailbroken?

If so you can hacktivate them.

If not you'll want to jailbreak them and use a rom that allows you to Hacktivate.

Is there any reason you couldn't borrow someones sim card, activate them, then simply pull it back out once you get beyond that point?

I'm not sure one sim card will allow me to activate two different ESNs...will it? Is this process something that AT&T or perhaps The Apple Store would do for me at no charge?

Nope. Just called The Apple Store and they want min. $29.95 for a single incident inquiry. Bastards.

Yep. I've got one of those somewhere in the dreaded, catch-all kitchen drawer.

It's no different than if you were to go buy a phone off of craigslist, stick your sim card in it, find out you don't like it then go back to your phone.

No fees needed, no additional work.

Well what models are they? Can't help you jailbreak them without that info.
