Default Stupid Dell...need easy tech advice

My wifes Inspiron 1525 keeps overheating because the fan has crapped out. Never mind the golf ball sized ball of crap that I fished out of it.

I say "stupid Dell" because you have to tear the entire laptop down to remove the fan. Dumbasses.

Anyway, should I go back with a factory replacement or is there something better to be had?

Factory replacement. I had the same problem with the same computer, 2008 version. (Though I didn't have as much trouble getting to the fan assmbly). I now use a "lap desk" that has two fans in it that run off of a USB port.

This is an '08 model as well, and it also sits on a usb powered fan desk thingy.

Yes. Got it halfway tore down, then put it back together and decided to wait until I had a new fan in hand before I went further.

Actually for that laptop the only thing you can do is get a factory replacement. Send me a pm and I can call one of my suppliers and see what type of deal I can get you.

Thanks, but its not that big of a deal. I'm finding them online between $10 and $20.

1-Stick to stock for that fan.
2-Double check the sheetmetal that contacts the CPU. I've seen quite a few that come loose over time, thus killing the heat transfer. For my job, I work with high power resistors, thus have the correct heat transfer goop. You can likely find a suitable replacement from Radio Shack or a decent automotive place.

While it's apart, it's a great time to vacuum out the whole thing. I use our central vac with a round brushed end on it to vacuum.
You may also want to check for the CMOS/Clock battery, some are buried in the bottom of the chassis as well. For the few dollars it costs, it's better to do it now than have to rip everything apart yet again since the battery is already 4+ years old.
Dell has decent online docs/videos for most PC work for their brand.

On the contrary, I quite frequently drop acid and lay my wifes laptop across my face to keep the goblins away. A light show could be enjoyable.

Well, since it has been in her lap, that's one way of doing it.

Precisely.

And for the apple fanboys, they cost alot more and fail too. IIRC the OP wanted to replace teh fan, not the whole laptop LOL>
