Anyone know if i can shove 16gb of ddr3 in a dell e6420? I just ordered one w/ all the goodies (Intel Core i7-2760QM, 512mb graphics, 128gb solid state, w ultimate 64bit, etc) but for $240 upgrade for 8gb, i left it at 2gb and planned on ordering some aftermarket ram for half the cost or less. But i'm unsure if i can put 2 8gb sticks in it or if i have todo 2 4gb sticks. Any dell techs out there? (dell says up to 8gb, but i've read afew people online has put 16gb). I know this is overkill but that the only way todo things. Oh, i'm thinking about using this memory Newegg.com - CORSAIR 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 Laptop Memory Model CMSO16GX3M2A1333C9 but the cpu supports 1600, so i was thinking about this too Newegg.com - CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory Model CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10 i'm unsure how much of a performance gain i'll see. |

Kingston memory finder says 8gb is max, part number KHX1600C9S3P1K2/8G Memory Search | Kingston You can try a pair of 8GB, be prepared to pay the restock fee if you have to return them. Just because you can get the ram to fit, don't mean the board will like it. |

There's people on the web that claim they run 16gb in their e6420, but i'd trust a tech thats on this board more than someone elsewhere on the web... As far as i can tell, it should support it just fine unless dell components or software prevents it. | |

How about contacting Dell directly?

Wow. You lost me at Dell. I actually charge extra to repair those machines. Damn proprietary drivers! |

Likely you'll need a customized BIOS to run over the Dell limit, this used to be common...now people just plug and pray. You can put 16GB in...Windows won't see it because the BIOS will not pass it through. Word on ram selection...watch voltage. The i7 line only likes 1.5v and overvolting the RAM can lead to bad things in the i7 architecture. |
