The MS river is the lowest I have ever seen it which makes finding stuff easier because all the dikes are exposed. We covered about ten miles on foot today in some pretty rough stuff. The corp of engineers placed and maintains rock dikes on the river that redivert flowing water away from the banks to prevent washing. The rock dikes catch alot of debris so you just have to walk the dikes and look under and all on them. The dikes are about a 1/4 mile long each consisting of small car to gravel. We started today at 5:15am and were done by noon. The rough walking on top of the 100 plus degree weather wears you out pretty quick. The river is on a slight rise but is schelduled to fall again. Every time is rains or rises and falls it uncovers something new.

I know a little about mammal fossils. It looks like many of the smaller teeth you have are horse teeth. ^^^this is a horse or deer axis which is the second cervical or neck vertebra. it keys into the atlas that attaches to the head. Nice! I think the big ass tooth is a tapier or big ass pig tooth. pretty cool stuff. You could look for a natural history museum in your area and see if they have a paleontologist or display of fossils. They would probably be really excited to see what you've found and may be able to better identify it. You may even be able to email them these photos to ID them. I dunno. |

My boys and I collect fossils down here in central and SW FL. I'm by no means an expert, barley an amateur actually. The last 4 pics in your first post are horse teeth and possibly Indian artifact. Bead or jewelery maybe. The really long skinny bones in another post are ribs. One of your other pics looks to be maybe a mastadon tooth. The one your holding in your hand. Great idea going to the Natural History Museum. also don't forget to check with your state about the possible nessecity of a permit to collect. Good Luck.. |
