Default The Bible in the Classroom...what should be taught?

So here's a good Sunday conversation...what should be taught to our kids in science class? Evolution or Creationism? Should it be taught that the Earth is millions or billions of years old, or only 6000?

I grew up in a rather religious family and up until a few years ago I took the bible at face value. After much thought and reflection I've come to the conclusion that the bible is just an old book of stories that have been rewritten over and over through time so some things have been sensationalized etc. It is however a rock solid book of guidelines to live your life by. No harm can come from teaching children how to live based on the bible. I just prefer it be brought up as a what it is, a book of parables not necessarily as a history book.

Do I believe in a magical man in the sky? Not really. Do I believe our ancestors crawled from the primordial ooze millions of years ago and eventually evolved into humans no.

But should they be taught from it at school (public, not private or faith-based)?

I don't think so, there are more important things that could be taught IMO.

In my opinion no. Keep the religion teachings in schools that aren't publicly funded.

this is one of those 'ticking time bomb' discussions, so my opinion is just that- my opinion. Science has proven how old the earth is and science has a pretty good case about the evolutionary process, the church has done a great job of repressing science ( and all of truths it has found) out of education for the past 2000 years or so. ( they can't have anyone challenging their 'authority' by proving them to be liars, can they?)

The church, and it's all powerful friendly helping book, have had a strangle hold on people for way too long and it continues to do so. I'm all about letting science do it's work and figure out the origins of our species and the possibilities of alien species.

No they shouldn't at public schools. And they need to take (in God we trust) off our money, cause we don't trust in God.

The Aliens will be here in December anyway and the world will change as we know it.

I believe in evolution as it is, a theory. Its the best guess given the information at hand. If some new information that can be tested and verified comes up that totally kills it, so be it. I will accept that change. If it turns out that we were "intelligently designed" by either a deity or an interstellar traveling superior species or transplants from Mars, then that is how it is.

The nice thing about science is that it doesn't care what or how you want things to be. It has no bias and is always being tested and modified for accuracy.

There are three times as many churches in the US as there are public schools. I see no need to bring religious curriculum any further into the public arena.

I side with the facts, or reasonable teachable facts. Kids already read enough made up stories.

Bill Nye is already on this.

They should teach only evolution in schools. If the story of the bible is told they should have to add ever story from every belief and that would take to much time. Religion should be separate from anything funded by the government. I agree with Ricky they should take "in god we trust" off our money. I get sick of all these politicians saying all these religious comments durring and after speeches.

Im not here to argue, just voicing my opinion.... I belive this world would be a much better place If God was still in public schools, do you think the things that are happening in the world today are just happening because of a fluke??? We are nearing the end times, and the New World order.... Its all writen in th Bible...

I don't know what happened. But I don't think I'll let a reworked history book and it's followers lead my life.

An Abraham Lincoln quote best states my religion.

"When I do good, I feel good; when I do bad, I feel bad, and that is my religion."

Not that tough to do. I'm a big kid and can think for myself.

There just isn't a nice way to put this, but you're a testament to the utter failure of our education system.
