I like hot rods and hot girls. It was nice that they picked a Eddie Cochrane tune instead of that psycho-billy rock-a-billy nonsense.

He's old school rock-a-billy more like rock and roll back in his day.

As for new rock a billy I'd like to hear recommendations beyond the Mike Ness/Social D I have never gotten deep into the rock a billy sounds.

Exactly. Eddie was rock n roll before rock a billy was 'invented'.

Well Eddie might be old time rock n roll but he wouldn't be in the Rock a Billy Hall of Fame if he weren't Rock A Billy.

Eddie Cochran

But yes there is a big difference between psychobilly, which technically Social Distortion and Rock a billy is Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, Carl Perkins, ELvis to name a few oldies, and for newer Rock A Billy the only band that really made it big in the US was the Stray Cats.

I dig what you are saying. But in the fifties, it was all called rock n roll. There were no rock sub genres until the sixties.

Wow...never thought I'd hear either of those called "rockabilly"......Social D is punk and Ness's solo stuff sounds like country to me.

BTW, the coolest car in that vid was at 0:28.....

Punk? I dunno, it follows the rockabilly school lines/lyrics and musical tones.

I'd never classify Social D as a truly punk act. I mean take Story of my Life...its like Ska guitars met old 50's bluegrass and rock.

My wife and I go to his Christmas show every year! He was incredible when I saw the Stray Cats back in the 80's, and he is even a better guitarist now!

I think rock a billy / psycho billy is where old punks come to retire. Social D is too hard to classify. Ness definitely hovers the line between punk and rock a billy.

Setzer is awesome, and Greg I agree 50s and 60s rock is truly Real Rock N Roll. I am ahuge fan of the 50s music and I love Rockabilly too. I wasn't trying to derail the thread or start an argument with you, I was just making an observation in general.

Anyway Ness has even called Social D Rockabilly/psychobilly and punk all mixed together in an interview he did when Ball and Chain was on MTV. Way back when MTV asctually played music.

I hear ya! Labels will always screw things up. Rockabilly, punk, hardcore, doo wop, thrash, alternative, whatever. It's all rock n roll.
