Default Shotguns

Getting a Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag Turkey Thug and that got me thinking about a basis home defense shotgun. I want a full stock and was thinking of a Mossberg 590 Tactical or a 500 Tactical when I came across the IAC Hawk 981R. Looks to be a very good copy of the Remington 870. It will accept the adjustable AR stocks for the 870 and is dirt cheap. Actually has good reviews. Since it will just sit in the cabinet unles needed except for a few box blasting sessions, it looks to be a pretty good choice.

Anybody have one of these?

Can't really beat a Mossberg 500 or a Remi 870.

If your going to go collapsible stock and pistol grip better do it quick in case the ban kicks in.

I just got a Stevens 320. For $180 it's hard to beat. It's a Winchester 1300 clone.

For home defense? If you ever had the unfortunate event of defending yourself with a shotgun are you going to stop and think about how much money you saved when you grab it?

To me it comes down to steel (870) or aluminum (500) receivers. Both the Mossberg 500 series & the Remington 870 are great, dependable, strongly supported shotguns. I paid $190 for a base 870 mag express 18" new (added a tube extender, ss spring & high vis follower, side saddle, tac safety,R3 recoil pad.) I prefer the durability of the steel 870. Don't try & save money on a small production brand shotgun, pick one of the 12 gauges that have proved themselves & proliferated every where. Spare parts & upgrades are far more common for the 500 & 870 (870 being the clear winner on selection alone.)
I can fix anything on my 870 with parts (& you can find about anywhere you can buy gun parts,) can you even buy spare firing pins or ejector springs for an IAC Hawk 981R?

What a stupid statement. I am trying to decide wether to get a single shotgun for waterfowl, turkey and home defense like a mossberg 590 or 835, or get my hunting gun and add a cheap 12ga pump for the bedroom. I don't need to be able to brag that I have a specific brand, just asked about a specific cheap brand tha I saw decent reviews on.

Just bought a Maverick model 88 12ga. New for $199. Made by Mossberg and is basically a stripped down cheap version of the 500. I have had no complains and just about any upgrade for the moss. will also fit the maverick. Good luck!

I own 5 870 Remington wingmasters and I have no complaints. Never a jam or misfire and they are very easy to break down and clean. Imo the 870 is the most reliable and user friendly shot gun period. And the different versions offer a affordable gun to those not wanting to spend a bunch of money.

Before you knock my $180 shotgun read the reviews on it. Even the Rifleman magazine said it is a great value. It does just as well as my Mossberg. It goes boom every time you pull the trigger.

The single most important part of any gun. If it dosen't go boom it doesn't matter how expensive it was.

mossbergs are nice and great guns from everyone i've ever talked to, but i've never personally owned one. That said, my first was an 870, and through the years have owned quite a few and I must agree, for a do it all gun, especially in home defense, they can't be beat (they just work, not that others don't too, but I wouldn't trade mine for anything), and parts are everywhere for them. Go to your local gunshop or gunshow and look around, I'm sure you can get one for a reasonable price.
