Default crazy idea

i was sitting around searching through the site and realized something, everyone narrows rims/tires. has anyone tried narrowing the axles themselves, like a drag car. i know it would make for narrow lower link location but it would allow you to use unnarrowed rims/tires for more traction and a larger contact patch. just an idea, let me know what you all think.

People narrow wheels/tires for a reason.

Larger contact patch does not always equal more traction.

i think it would also cut down on link/shock location and articulation, unless running a stick.

With narrow tires you get more Lbs/in Thats whats important. Because a crawler may only have 2 of its tires on the ground at a time its important that those tires grip.

it's a given fact that the larger the contact patch the more traction you will get. a great example is a drag car. the only way they get all of the 1500+ hp to the ground is through very wide tires. if they put narrow tires on the back they wouldn't go very far very fast.

Yes, now. Lets start adding some holes, and jagged edges and hills and slow speed to that. Your wide tires are going to get youhung up.

Gotta be grooved slicks, you know, to let that superior traction work in the wet too.

Its all about the surface your driving on. How many 1:1 crawlers do you see with huge wide tires? Not many. Because the speed the crawlers move its all about lbs/in to the ground. Not a 3ft wide tire

well i know that around here a wide tire is key. personally i'm about ready to get a set of jumbo maxx swamp dawgs because they are so wide. the wider tire also helps on side hill manuevers.

Try it out, let us know what you find. Every terrain, driver, and vehicle setup will work best with different tires. From my personal expierence, which I will admit is pretty accurate but limited, I found a narrow tire grips better crawling than an insanely wide one.

I narrow because everyone else is doing it!!!

I have 14"wide tires on my 1:1 and those are to much tire!!

NO matter what type or wheelin you do, Rc or 1:1, you can count on you rig bouncing, possible even jumping a few good inches off the ground, and when that happens and you come back down the wider the tire..the more stress it will put on the axle shafts giving you nothing but snapped parts!! Learned it the hard way.

Plus, you have to take into consideration the logistics of narrowing an entire axle. You'll have to make sure it is just as strong at the cut point(s), both in terms of the case and the axle itself.

This is kind of along the lines of having a rig that follows ackermans steering principle. Thats great in racing, but not so important crawling.
