My grandfather was there on that day in 1941. He was 20 years old. I can't imagine going through that chaos as a 20 year old. Just recently the Pearl Harbor Survivors organization made the decision to dissolve. Anyone who knows a WWII veteran needs to say thank you and shake their hand. Those brave men and women are getting few and far between. Thank you to all the men and women in our armed forces. |

If you ever have the chance to see Pearl Harbor in person, DO IT! It's a very sobering reminder of what it takes to preserve our freedoms. Pictures don't come close.

(B) Heath, Robert D., USA - Awarded: SS - Korean War My grandfather served in the Korean war. He also spent a short run at Pearl Harbor. I lost my grandfather 2 years ago almost to the date (about 2 weeks from now actually). We traveled down to KY so I could see him 2 nights before Christmas. But we couldnt make it to him that night due to a bad snow storm. He passed away that night and Ive never really talked about it to anyone else except for now. Its something that I still havent forgiven myself for. I truly miss that old man. He was in a sense my father, my role model and hero. He taught me to be a man, keep your word and treat others with respect and dignity. Ill never forget my grandpa. Hell, typing this now is "making my eyes sweat" as he would say. His motto and what he told me almost everytime we went fishing, cleaned the lawn mower or RV-Be a man, never let em see you cry. Lead by example and always show strength. My grandpa was the toughest sonuvabitch Ive EVER met, and always will be in my heart. My heart definately goes out to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. I found this a little bit ago. Definately worth the watch. from Pacific Historic Parks on Vimeo. Last edited by Hoosierdady; 12-07-2012 at 08:15 AM. |

My aunt remarried, I was over for a visit and noticed a framed lot of navy metals asked the new husband if he was in the navy and got a hell of a story out of him about pearl harbor and the aftermath. He was a underwater welder, and cut open the sunken ships to retrieve the dead and living. Said that their was a lot of survivors that died while they tried to get them out of air pockets within ships. He has since passed away. I'm glad I got a meet and talk with him. I'm 38 and my dad would have been 94 last may so I have always had a deep respect for the elderly. So next time an older person tries to tell you a story take the time to listen, after all the world you take for grantide was forged by these people. |

Thanks for this Juan! My grandfather was at Pearl Harbor. He was a naval sonar engineer on a communications ship and survived (or I would not be here), but was witness to the event first hand and told me many stories about WW2 as I was growing up, Pearl Harbor being the only one that ever brought tears to his eyes.

My father was also there, at Schofield Barraks. Took a round in the shin, one on the butt and had a 105mm tow bar break his knee. He was 17.

My father was a Korean war veteran,a hero some would say,(1 silver star,2 bronze stars, and a purple heart),he was a airborne ranger, paratrooper, platoon sargent. He said that the real tough guys were the men and women that expirianced pearl harbor, they are true heroes. The ones that died did so with honor and the ones who lived lived knowing the greatest horror.God bless all veterans past ,preasent, and(hopefully not) future.

During the Veterans Day holiday, I was eating at an Applebees. This year they were seating the vets together at common tables ( Ala mess hall ) and I had the honor of sitting with an old timer who was wearing an old ships hat. He told the story about how he was on a tender that was docked in Pearl Harbor the day of the attack. He didn't talk too much about it, it was easy to visibly see it was upsetting him so we just compared notes about everyday life on board a ship. He told me that he was the last one still alive from everyone on his ship.

Thanks for the bump C*H*U*D....My grandfather lied about his age to join the Navy after pearl harbor. However I have very rarely heard him talk about his time in the Navy, when he does he says "Those who saw nothing say everything and tell stories, and those who saw everything say nothing". My Grandfather is a pretty haggerd dude with a few washed out Navy tattoos, and hands down one of the coolest guys I have ever met. Joining the Navy as a kid at 17 and then running his own successful business shows the determination of the people of that era. Being the fact he (and many others) did all this on a Third grade education and can hardly read to this day.......but they dropped everything to work hard and keep the family farm and then fought for our freedom to make the way of life we have today......
