Ha ha, gdb nailed it, if you're cold pedal harder. Actually, I hate the cold too, but Pisgah is so worth it. And with the right gear, I was toasty all day long. A 200 weight merino wool base layer under my jersey, and my PI thermal bib tights under my shorts, and I was good. Temps were in the low 40's all day. Also, we have seasonal trails that are only open certain times of the year, in this case Oct 15th - Apr 15th. Butter Gap was the seasonal trail yesterday, and it was fun as hell.

I'm fine with cold until I start sweating. Then it's cold when you're moving or hot when you're standing still, no in between. Plus my eyeballs would freeze.

Coldest I have rode in was -22 F. Hardest part was to keep the frank and beans warm. Otherwise, with proper preparation, it isn't that bad. Keep moving. I do fear a mechanical failure, so I am not too far from town and always have my cell phone. (For the record, at those temps I have only been out at the most for 60 minutes before I found it hard to keep my toes pink.) I rode in sub-zero several times last year and once so far this season. My town occasionally beats out Minnesota locales for "coldest-in-the-nation". The one-time we got the "coldest" this season was a day I rode to work. It was -5 F with blue-bird skies and felt good. I wonder about those in AK or ME. They have to ride a lot in the cold. |

If it's below 0 and I have a say in it, I'm not even going outside. |

Yeah, I don't like really cold weather that much. Although, I do stay a tad warmer than most other people unless I'm not moving. Also got out for a ride today and figured out how to connect some of the trails a little better. Almost ate shit too. I was going down the trail and my front tire decided to slip and turn a little in a rocky section. https://www.strava.com/activities/438844814 |

And another ride today doing pretty much the same loop but without having to turn around on one section. Also just ordered some of these. Sombrio Shazam Mid Top Shoes | Chain Reaction Cycles |

Got another Pisgah trip in Yesterday with a friend. We did a big loop, with lots of steep climbing, and long downhill runs. We rode the new Spencer Gap from the top, to middle fork, to Fletcher creek to the top and back down (fun as hell BTW), to the parking lot then ran Trace Ridge and Wash Creek, then climbed back out to the truck. I was beat at the end of it, but damn what fun. Made a couple small changes on the bike recently, moved my stem down one spacer on the steerer, and got my suspension settings pretty well figured out, and I feel like it's really dialed now. Other than some new wheels after the first of the year, I'm not touching anything. It climbs very well, and yet it rips going down, I love this bike!! |
