I've been riding an aluminum Mongoose 26" since 1998. Has a crap-ton of miles on it and is still in generally good shape but decided it was time for something new. So after doing some research and trying to find something that fit my style and the terrain I want to ride, I pulled the trigger on a Specialized RockHopper 29. A bit more expensive than I initially started out looking for, but not crazy expensive like some of the bikes out there (that Felt up there ^). Mtn Bikes sure have come a long way in 16 years...

Rode bmx for about 17 or so years and within the last 2 years,i made the jump to 26".20" was just getting too small.the first bike isnt much but its a gary fisher opie with rock shox pikes,race face evolve dh crankset,and sun single track rims laced to hubs that i cant figure out.
Second bike is my baby,a specialized p26,with a snafu pickle 440 rigid fork,profile pivotal seat,and animal seat post.its basically a big bmx bike so not sure if you guys will approve of it but atleast its 26""thumbsup"

Just followed you back. I always use Strava, its pretty popular in SoCal. I can see where/when all my friends are riding and it also shows me how hard I need to work to keep up with them. Great motivator.

You're going to love the 29. I've been through a few bikes now and definitely started with something similar to your RH 29. Finally worked my way up to the Felt Virtue as a happy middle ground, it was that or two bikes. The mid travel lightweight 26 gets me by for most everything I want to do.

Shoot, you guys have motivated me to go home at lunchtime and grab the bike. Trails will probably be wet as hell, but I'm going to give it a go.

Today's lunch ride, it was HOT! At one point my buddies Garmin said 108F.

Ah, I see. So it's like racing but you're alone, or a tool to use to get in shape. Now I'm just waiting for the weather to be not so hot. Been trying to wake up early so I can ride but that's not going to well.:roll:

The green one is an SE Racing STOUT (steel, full Rigid), the sand one is Natedog's, and it's a Nashbar SS 29'er... if anyone has thought about this bike as an option, it's a great deal for a great bike.

here are a few of my 700c bikes. I've also got a steel fixed gear for winter (used to be off season) training, of course with brakes, and no skinny jeans. Also, notice that little American flag on the top tube near the headset, it's not just a sticker. There is a reason I own 3 of these US built frames. It broke my heart when they moved all remaining frame production over seas, and these were the last 2 years of American production 2009/2010. I'd like to get a Caffeine 29'er someday if they are still out there.

Yes and yes...use as you see fit. Good for tracking your progress, I just use time, route, mileage and calculate in my head...see if I'm faster or not. "thumbsup"

Yes the Nashbar SS 29er is a smokin deal you'll easily pay double their price anywhere else for same setup, love mine!

CX frame in there too! "thumbsup" I been thinking about that lately.

Those pump/repair stations are the shiz, everything you need right on the side of the paved bike path and easily accessible from the dirt trail...we are lucky! The stand really comes in handy for road bikes and/or drivetrain problems.

Good stuff guys! I stopped and picked up a sixxer myself on the way home today. Just something about bikes n beers!

I came to a startling realization today; I've been going about this all wrong from day one. I've been looking at getting back into mtn biking as a way to get in shape pretty much, and that's it. I'm really bad to go ride after work and constantly look at my watch, and limit my ride time for no reason really. So today, I decided to change that attitude. I left my watch in the truck, as it doesn't matter how long it takes me to make a lap, how long of a break I take, or what time I get home; I'm here to just ride and have fun. And the results speak for themselves; I made four laps, plus some side trail exploration, and I made the climb including the log crossing every single lap. I love the 75mm stem, it's perfect, I can loft the front when needed and the front stays planted when climbing. The seat I bought doesn't fit my arse, if anyone wants to try it let me know, it won't work for me. I did 4.1 miles after work today, Strava only logged 3.8 because some service on my phone had to be enabled first, but I had a blast and I'm really starting to love my bike now that it feels how it should geometry wise. I also ate shit twice, still clipped in, once into a pile of rip rap, that one is gonna hurt a bit tomorrow. :lol:

A piece of advice for someone thinking about getting a single speed bike, it's a good option if you already have another bike and are somewhat experienced. But, it's not really a good option for a first bike. It's will kick your ass and make your legs cramp up for a couple of days. Plus it's not really confidence inspiring, especially when you have to hike a bike up hills."thumbsup"
