War Pig's new addition/shop. So I've been really busy since last June. I'm acting as the general contractor on a 1500 sq ft addition to my house. It's been on paper for 5-6 years and we finally decided to break down and do it. With 4 kids we were just running out of room. We love our house and neighborhood so the decision was easy to add on. Since we only have a 9000 sq ft lot, I knew that if I ever want a shop I had to go down not out. Our existing house is a 15 year old 1900 sq ft two level house with a crawlspace. I knew that it was going to take some work building a full basement next to our existing house. Enjoy the adventure..... Our house. Addition will be on the left side. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...psvjavir9b.jpg |
Re: War Pig's new addition/shop. :mrgreen:Well congrats to you... smart idea... we have a big lot and love everything around us.. We are hopping someday to do the samething... |

Re: War Pig's new addition/shop. First up was getting the kiddos involved. Time to remove the trim and gas fireplace. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...psftpnk29z.jpg Grass has to go first. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...pso2s0jtik.jpg After digging down to the bottom of the footings, it's time for the concrete chainsaw. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...ps1zwaxavt.jpg |
Re: War Pig's new addition/shop. I cant wait to see this unfold, you are a ambitious man with many skills"thumbsup" I think you need to adopt me as I know the basement shop is going to be A+++++++ |
Re: War Pig's new addition/shop. Foundation is coming out! http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...psxvqbqz6r.jpg Dug down 5 feet to solid ground. Next is support beams and temporary posts. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...psm7eeak5d.jpg There were 6x10 beams under the floor beams to support the house while we excavated for the basement. I used a 30 ton jack and some 6x6 posts to support it. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...psg5yno2f0.jpg |
Re: War Pig's new addition/shop. More foundation coming out. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...psm3eognuh.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...pspya7olfq.jpg |
Re: War Pig's new addition/shop. When your done Ive got a garage that can come down for add-on space. I'll bring the trailer over . Watching this unfold "thumbsup" |
Re: War Pig's new addition/shop. I thought that you'd lay some temporary track and wheel in one of these to help with the project! "thumbsup" http://www.nmcrail.com/uploadedImage...E_scale(1).jpg |
Re: War Pig's new addition/shop. Ohmygoodnessgratious. That's a man-task right thar. Got my popcorn. J |
Re: War Pig's new addition/shop. I hired someone to do the majority of the excavating. My machine just wasn't big enough and with my 40+ hour a week job, I just didn't have time. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...psylt0h2oe.jpg This is what 250 yards (23 dump trucks) of dirt looks like. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...pslmz13zku.jpg |
Re: War Pig's new addition/shop. Holy smokes....Go Tim Go! BTW, let me know if you need your garage modeled up in CAD so you can get look at it before your done. :) |
Re: War Pig's new addition/shop. Looking pretty sketchy! That hole is 9 1/2 feet deep. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...ps0ttrtcu8.jpg |
Re: War Pig's new addition/shop. After having the foundation contractor look at the hole, he told me he needed it cleaned up a little better. I cut a ramp down into the hole and drove my 35 into it. Spent the day cleaning and leveling it. Rented another machine for the day to scoop the dirt from the hole, and eventually help pull my machine out. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...ps79n30tns.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...psidzdge9n.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...psvrcvgktd.jpg |

Re: War Pig's new addition/shop. You must have some sort of previous experience building houses? Or are you just flyin by the seat of your pants haha. |
Re: War Pig's new addition/shop. No actual construction experience but I've done a little bit of everything over the last 25 years. I read and study things a lot, plus I've just been one of those people that can do whatever I put my mind to. I guess I'm just an all around handy guy. I know my limitations though and that's why I hired out the concrete, framing, insulation, and drywall. |

Re: War Pig's new addition/shop. The concrete guys set up forms, poured and stripped the forms in 3 1/2 days. Over 40 cubic yards in that foundation. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...pss4iwugws.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...psg47jjsft.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...psn7lo2toe.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...pssp2529dj.jpg |

Re: War Pig's new addition/shop. Starting the framing. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...psajmvjznt.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...psvttkgyyp.jpg The weight of the house is back on the foundation. Finished the shear wall. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...psw0t7tctg.jpg Starting to frame the basement. My future RC fab room is there in the back of the basement. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...psygmnm7rt.jpg |
Re: War Pig's new addition/shop. More framing..... http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...pss4kwmcp8.jpg Big glulam is in....time for I-joists. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...pspbpin4bc.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...pstxtpzrw1.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...psmbbj5vyh.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...psqgoockue.jpg |
Re: War Pig's new addition/shop. Time to deck. 1 1/8" T&G plywood, I want the floor to be SOLID! http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...psz31oxarp.jpg Don't forget the rain drains. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...psqkbkw8xd.jpg Had to figure out where the foundation drains were going to drain to since they at 9 feet down. Decided to make this sump well and bury it before I back filled. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...pswb2ewfpy.jpg http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...psmomx8osn.jpg Looks like the framing lumber is here. Framing tomorrow! http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...psnrrnu8g5.jpg |
Re: War Pig's new addition/shop. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...psn7lo2toe.jpg I'm not critiquing or anything like that, I'm just not understanding the reason for the partial pour and leaving these voids, then a 2nd pour to bring everything up to grade? The overall project looks great! "thumbsup" Great forward thinking to give yourself a personal area while providing for the family. I hope it all goes well for you. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...psnrrnu8g5.jpg Can you send me some cut off scraps? I've been away from the area for so long, I've forgotten what the red cedar smells like! |

Re: War Pig's new addition/shop. And I was proud that I broke out the tape measure and level to hang a picture for my wife. Nice work. |
Re: War Pig's new addition/shop. 5' ?? It makes sense now. I'll send you a PM for a box of cedar shavings."thumbsup" Living on the east cast for so long, basements are just assumed to be a part of the building process. It's much less complicated to have a hole 10' below grade on this side of the continent. |
Re: War Pig's new addition/shop. What are you putting on that floor? A machine shop? Massively thick plywood and such a tight spacing on the joists has gotta support a massive amount of weight. I think my parents house has 3/4" osb on floor joists spaced 24" apart....it's been a lot of years though since they built it, I may be mistaken. |
Re: War Pig's new addition/shop. Quote:
I was surprised to see a glu-lam beam, when I saw the pocket in the wall I assumed a nice piece of steel was going to be set into the hole. |
Re: War Pig's new addition/shop. Quote:
I could never use OSB. The thing with OSB is that "if" it ever gets wet, it swell up. When it dries, it stays swollen. With plywood, if it gets wet, it may swell some, but when it dries back out it will go back to its original form, or close to it. I love the job you are doing. I think it look awesome so far! Great job! SS |
