The thermostat wasn't the problem. Either the cat or muffler was blocking the exhaust and causing excessive back pressure. Throwing parts at it didn't fix it.

Your full of shit and once again the thermostat was stuck open and caused the fuel to boil in the fuel pump and when cold air forced in the carb hit the boiling gas it cause the vapor lock It did with cat and muffler connected or completely removed, it was running way to hot, I changed the thermostat and it dropped the temps done and the previous owner admitted to me he never did any maintenance on the Truck and admitted he could easily fixed the oil leak that ****ed carb and made it run rich and plugged up the cat cause the smog referee told him he needed to replace the cat and replace the bad sensors on the carb that the oil caused to stop functioning, but he did not do anything and the referee told him it was running way to rich, and he didn't do anything to improve how it ran and eventually the carb and the smog system were turned to shit I replaced the carb, removed the smog shit and the truck has ran a 1000 times better from when I first got it it only cost $ 75.00 for the replacement cat, and how much is a can of ****ing carb cleaner too clean off the oil and unfunk the carb the previous owner was a dumbass and didn't work in the truck, and willing admitted it I replaced the fuel pump and the coil cause they had over 300,000 miles and they were like $110 for both and now I know, I won't have problems with them later on Mark and I figured it out, I was letting it idle to long at start up when the truck is cold at the fast idle it runs rich I need to blip the throttle a lot sooner cause at high idle it runs rich and turns the inside of the tail pipe sooty So that explains why it was always sooty I'm going to stop letting it idle high for long periods I have slowly fixed all of the previous owner problems and the truck runs good and has for a little over 3 years with no problems, until now so let see how long it goes again until it has problems Last edited by kgb424; 09-04-2015 at 12:03 PM. |

An open thermostat won't cause a vehicle to run hot. Your extreme lack of vehicle fundamental knowledge is impressive though. Odds are your buddy agreed with your hypothesis so you'd stop blathering ad nauseum. People that speak on and on about a subject often find those they are speaking to will agree with whatever it is they are talking about if they go on long enough. It has nothing to do with actually being wrong or right. |

It does baffle me how a stuck open thermostat would do that. A stuck closed thermostat is one thing, but a open one I don't see how. I have ran many older cars without a thermostat without a issue. I know it's not the right thing to do but it gets the job done. |
