I don't get it

I changed out the fuel pump and fuel filter

and the truck is even worse now

cause now it starts running bad and starts sputtering and back firing at 35 miles per hour

so now I can't even drive the truck

I don't get it, the gas was flowing pretty good from the lines until I remembered to take the gas cap off and it released the pressure on the lines and it stopped flowing

while I changed out the fuel pump and filter

how does it get worse and drop 10 miles per hour before it cuts out

I'm lost no xxxxxxxx clue

of what is going on now

I called Mark this morning he suggested I change out the fuel filter and pump

he also suggested that I drain some fuel out of the fuel tank cause the sock will not let water in so could be water in the fuel tank

but I can't find the drain cause there is a skid plate and the skid if part of the fuel tank mounting and looks like you got drop the fuel tank

I called Mark a second time and he is coming over tonight

he thinks I still got fuel problems

I'm thinking next is new plugs, wires, cap, and rotor

cause it might be electrical

I had a old four stroke dirt bike that had a coil and it ran rich and it would shoot out blue flames and would back fire every once and awhile

I cleaned up the wiring and that ended the back firing leaned out the carb a little and no more blue flames

but the Toyota is a lot different tuning than that old bike was

so I'm in over my head and will admit it

"beaning to rich" ? no idea what that is, sorry!

ok Mark came over to my house

and took the truck for a test drive and it sputtered and backfired

and we tested the fuel pump and the delivery is good and the are no cracked fuel lines or water in the gas

he doesn't think its electrical or ignition or the coil cutting out

he thinks it the carb, maybe the needle and seat

and wants to take it apart and check it

so when I can a ride I will take the truck in

I was gonna say, days ago, that you need to pull the carb apart but, this HAS been a fairly entertaining thread.

It's a carburetor not the space shuttle. There are 4 screws holding the air filter base plate in place then 6 more screws holding the top plate on the carb body. Once those screws are out and the e clip holding the choke linkage on the arm is removed the top plate comes right off and any issue will be right there in front of him. Or it could be as simple as the filter built into the top plate that I linked a schematic to but hey, what do I know?

He showed me where the filter is on the front of the carb

and I took it out and it was clean, no dirt

it was hotter than shit today

and when I tested the truck early it was around noon and would go 35 to miles per before sputtering and backfiring

when Mark tested the truck it was around 6 pm and a lot cooler and would go almost to 50 miles per hour before it sputtered

I installed the carb and tuned it and got it close to where it needed to be

Mark fine tuned it after I installed it

and other than cleaning the K&N air cleaner

I have never have taken the carb apart

and not sure if I want to attempt it

cause I don't want to screw it more than it is

and don't want to a clip or something that's hard to replace

and Mark doesn't mind doing it

and I rather have him do it so I know its

done right

Weber my be the easiest carburetor to rebuild ever. There really isn't much to screw up that you can't find the answer to using google.

Stock progressive two barrel Toyota carb is one of the best carbs I've ever run, matches the engine perfectly, fuel efficient, has a clever altitude compensation system that uses a sealed diaphragm valve to add bleed air in at high altitude to lean it so it doesn't run rich, this system works very well. Set the float on the low side of float bowl sight glass and my 1981 22R would run at almost any angle, even when the washer fluid was gravity draining out of the reservoir and my azz was sucking seat cushion on the Rubicon. Weber prolly makes more power, but my gearing made up for that.

X2, I've rebuild carbs on the trail, still mounted on the intake manifold with screwdriver, long piece of vacuum line (to blow out all the passageways, jets, etc.), couple rags and that's it...they are very simple and reliable units when kept clean and properly maintainted.

X2...git r dun! Also good to add a piece of heater hose or the Toyota factory black foam fuel line insulation over the fuel line, I did mine from the frame rail to the fuel pump and from the pump to carb. The insulation should not be wrapped tight around the fuel line, the extra little air space helps isolate and insulate from underhood heat.

Later to day when it cools off a lot

not screwing with gasoline in 100 degree heat and it noon and getting hotter

I'm going to take the Throttle body off

Mark suggests I look and see if there is dirt in the Needle seat for the floats

I bought some B12 carb cleaner so I can spray it out

if it needs it, I hope there is not a blockage in the carb some where

Is there anything else I should be looking at, beside if it clean, and needs a cleaning

when I have it apart

does it just cut out at speed or does it sputter and die?

never messed much with yotas, but i wouldnt rule out ignition. i had a bitch of a time with an old pontiac falling flat on its face that turned out to be a bad pickup coil in the hei dizzy.

it starts sputtering and some times backfires and the power goes away and the float bowl empty's out

but if let off the throttle a little, it will continue to run and the power comes back and float bowl refills

and if you step on the throttle again it will pick up speed until it starts sputtering again

that why Mark suggests I take the carb apart and look at it

we tested the new fuel pump, the delivery is good

or it could be the coil going south, I will look in my Chilton and see if I can test it with an ohm meter

tomorrow morning when its cool

I'll work on it
