Santa was good to me in the gift card department this year so I decided to upgrade my home brewing equipment. Just got my new 4 gallon fermenter and plan to put it to work this weekend! [emoji1303]

We've been through every brand you can think of and believe it or not settled on a DELL (Alienware) this time around. She upgrades every 2 years or so.

When I shop for her I don't look at production/home/office crap, I go straight to gaming because they are generally bad ass.

Dell/Alienware is quite good, but there are others that are equally good, if not better. A perfect example would be Razer. Their laptops are probably even better then the MacBooks...and, geared towards gaming, they are equally good for CAD & video editing (both of which utilize GPU acceleration). Building a desktop is actually fairly easy (building a laptop is all but impossible), as is selecting proper components.

Believe it, or not, the hardest part of building a computer is usually deciding on a case. I know that sounds strange, but you have to first understand that not all cases support all motherboard formats. For example, you can't install an ATX motherboard inside a Mini-ITX case...and, while a Mini-ITX motherboard will physically fit inside almost any case, not all cases have motherboard mount screw holes positioned for a Mini-ITX motherboard. On top of that...and, as I'm sure you're aware...cases come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, colors, footprints (ie. width & depth), as well as having different features. As I wanted a case with the smallest footprint possible, plus a case that mounts the graphics card vertically, that limited my possibilities, making the selection simultaneously easier, and more difficult (as compromises end up having to be made).

As for the actual assembly of a desktop, depending on the complexity of the build, it's actually possible to fully assembled a basic desktop in as little as 15 minutes (there are actually competitions on how quickly an assembler can build a computer to completing POST, ie. Power-On Self Test). More complex builds...especially those with custom closed-loop liquid cooling systems...can easily take 1-2 days, depending on how complex. The system I'm planning, including all internal customization, should take me no more than 3hrs...but, it's the external customizing, which I'll have to complete before I even start the build, that could take longer. That last point is something very few people do, as it's primarily "personalizing" the computer, so that my NZXT H1 case doesn't look like everyone else's NZXT H1 case.

That’s what I run, only reason I see for Pro is the Remote Desktop function, I do like using that for some projects.

Tutns out, with this build, selecting the case won't turn out to be the most difficult part...selecting the graphics card will. Due to the minimal amount of internal space, dimensions for potential graphics cards are very specific. On top of that, the maximum length of any graphics card is dependant on the height (cards longer then a certain length must be shorter in height then longer cards). The worst part is the card's width, as cards no wider than 52mm can be used...except that NZXT doesn't publish that info (the great majority of RTX 3000-series cards are fairly "thick").

Thankfully, now that I know the actual maximum graphics card dimensions (it was like pulling teeth to get the info from them), to I can finally start narrowing down the possibilities.

Let the building commence...no, not another RC...but, my new computer. Already purchased: Asus ROG STRIX Z490-I motherboard, Intel 10th-Gen Core i7-10700K (unlocked, for OCing), 32GB (2x 16GB of Corsair Vengeance LP 3600MHz RAM, Corsair ML140mm fan (for the closed loop liquid cooling), 2x Corsair iCUE QL140mm fans (for back exhaust), and 1x Samsung M.2 970 EVO Plus 500GB SSDs (for 1TB RAID 0 Windows boot drive).https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...709446298d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...fc8c6a7e86.jpg
Still needing 2x Samsung 870 EVO 1TB SATA SSDs (for 2TB RAID 0 data drive), and an RTX 3070 graphics card...oh, yes, and the OS...duh...lol

1 Attachment(s)
Picked up the Axial standard axle conversion kit. The LHS just got one kit in today and I was lucky enough to be the first to ask about them.

I initially planned on installing these on my 10.3 JLU, but now I'm thinking these may go on my GCM J2 Skeleton build that I have been trying to complete for the past couple years. The offset pumpkin on the front axle will work out great with the setup that I'm using.

Or maybe I'll put these on my spare VP Chassis Kit with the VFD trans. Hell, I don't know! Since the weather is crap now, I've got plenty of time to figure it out!

My Bowhouse RC order arrived late last night. These aluminum pieces are made to fix the slop and bump steer on the Element IFS kit. I will be replacing the stock plastic parts on my IFS Trailwalker with these.

Attachment 393611

Also found this at my local Sam's Club today for $14 bucks. A nice assortment of bits in a handy carrying case.

For where I live and the conditions I drive in, absolutely. Yellow is reflected and refracted less when dealing with water droplets (i.e. fog, rain, etc), so it punches through better.

The final "pieces of the puzzle" are coming together. Today, picked up the data drives...Samsung's latest achievement in SSD technology, the 870 EVO, with read/write speeds equaling M.2 speeds (560MB/s & 530MB/s.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...fb1b748f14.jpg
Also going into the new computer, to the latest generation of GPUs from Nvidia. In this case, that would be an Asus TUF RTX 3070 OC. And, no, I didn't pay "scalper" pricing...my local computer parts store, Central Computers, just happened to get a few units in today, and I was lucky enough to snag the last one.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...f406608fde.jpg
Now, to all I'm waiting for is a 3D-Printed back panel k so I can install two 140mm exhaust fans), and a SATA power cable (to power the Corsair controller).

UPDATE: Computer built, BIOS update, both RAID-0 arrays configured, Windows 10 Pro installed, and currently running initial benchmarks.

Re: Pics of your latest purchase

I finally broke down and bought a new toolbox. I outgrew my 27" "machinest's chest" at least a decade ago and have been storing a lot of my tools that are in cases in cabinets next to the old box, and drawers under my workbench. I knew exactly where everything was, and it was all quite orderly, but anytime someone else worked on anything in my garage, I'd have to educate them on where to find a specific tool.

Well, my wife recently did A TON of work on her new to her truck (all new rotors/pads/and a caliper, steering rack bushings/inner/outer tierods, 2" lift coils, 4" lift spindles, rear add-a-leaf, rear lift blocks/u-bolts, stainless braided brakelines, 4 Bilstein shocks, Mickey Thompson tires/KMC wheels, locking tailgate handle, new lift struts for the tonneau cover, polished the headlights, repaired the driver's power seat, replaced driver's power mirror, etc, etc) completely by herself (with occassional instruction) and she finally noticed how big of a pain in the ass it was having to search all over the place to grab a tool. Before finishing her projects, she told me that it was time to get a new toolbox!

I had been eyeing the 56" Milwaukee at Home Depot for awhile, but started shopping around for other similarly sized boxes around the same price point. I looked at US General, Kobalt, Craftsman, etc, but ended up with a Husky 56". Build quality was EXACTLY the same as the Milwaukee (most likely built on the same line in China) but with a better (for me) drawer layout, for $500 less. I couldn't bring myself to buy a black or red toolbox, so I ordered the gray Husky online, signed up for an HD credit card to save $100 (it will be paid off and closed immediately), and picked it up Monday. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-He...E&gclsrc=aw.ds

My friends and neighbors unloaded and assembled it for me (I'm still recovering from spinal fusion) and I've been picking away at transferring my tools over. Besides the larger power tools, everything has its place now, but to no surprise of mine, the box is at least 90% full!

Now I just need to decide if I'm going to keep the old box, or pass it on to a deserving youngin in need...
