Default 12v fummins or 7.3 idi? cant decide..

I like both motors. I really do. I think there is more mods for the 12v but the idi.. man does it remind me of a LMTV cold start. I miss that a lot.

the only thing id be towing is an enclosed for my ranger or alfa. Im not saying I don't like 6.0 powerchokes.. but my dad has a nice one. sounds good with the magnaflow duals.

I just am a boxy style guy I guess. I like boxes.

Idi's are turds. I've had one tweaked but still N/A. My best friends dad had a built to the hilt 6.9, big turbo, intercooler, blah blah. It was as built as the modified injector pump would allow. After the head gaskets blew yet again he yanked it out and dropped in a very mild 12 valve. Pulls his 31' 5th wheel far better and gets better mileage to boot.

My friend has an 85 4 door long box dually ferd with a built to the balls 12 valve running twins. I was at his place yesterday as he was replacing 5th gear after he stripped the teeth out of the middle of it.

i dont care for diesels at all, hated working on them with a passion. That being said, I would take the 12v anyday over the idi...

12v fummins it is. I didn't think a 7.3 idi would be a turd boosted. blown head gasket because head was bolted not studded?

Studded, shaved pistons to drop compression to allow for more boost, custom cam, springs, port work etc. When I say built to the balls I don't mean a junkyard turbo setup and fresh krylon.

It amazes me that people would even consider going into a motor and not replace the studs.

My brother has a 12v with a broken odometer it stopped at 500k that was 9 years ago. He still pulles hot shot loads all over Texas he's had 3 manual transmissions and 2 turbos. The motor still pulls 30 ft good neck trailer with round bails if hay no problem.

Michigan is full of hooligans and tards.

the 12v is a beast of an engine. its like a tiny series 60 in a way. well in the aspect of lasting for so long. just finding a 12v fummins with a man trans is the hardest part.

reason why I considered a 7.3 idi.. the sound. it has 2 more cylinders. and I can put an 88mm t6 on it without worrying about overboost. and they are a dime a dozen.

a 88 fummins woulda been a great find. if I found one.. id sas it. and give it a meth injection and probably try to get 650hp out of it.

I have a 92 idi with ats turbo kit, just hit 104k. I love the truck, but with an idi your pretty limited unless you want to spend a lot of money on upgrades and it still wouldn't be as good and reliable as a 12v. One day I plan on turning it into a fummins.

I worked for Waukesha for years packaging/rebuilding diesel / natural gas engines and compressors/gen sets. My choice is Cummins. However Perkins makes a good inline 4 that's sweet in small truck boat etc application.

If I hadn't picked up my Subaru, and wasn't planning on dumping a built turbo motor and trans in it, I was stupendously close to grabbing a 7.3. But, I demand a manual, and I couldn't find one... And the Baja popped up, so I grabbed it instead.
