Default On line game "latency" / Ping

Hey guys, Im not to good with computer stuff, so maybe someone here can help me out. I started playing counter strike again but it hasnt been much fun because its laggy as hell :-( When I used to play my "ping" / latency was like 12 when I would play on nearby servers and it would go down to like 4 or 6 if I hosted my own server BUT now its at like 200-300 Even on my own servers... I have a good internet connection, its a cable set up (optimum on line) both at home and at work but its terrible slow as both places. I tired clearing out all the stuff in a scan disk and even defragged the computers but its not any better. Does anyone know how I can reduce my ping? or why a few years later (nothing has changed, I even have a better computer at home now) its so slooooooow for me? I really want to play but unless I play in my own server its horrible and I ususally end up getting kicked cause I lag everyone elses server.

Any help is appreciated.

-Mike

well i play alot and the olny time i lag is if i have anthing else open when i play. i don't know why png shot up so high but i usually don't have a problem with it for that matter i usually get kicked for being over the 150 limit. try reinstalling it. if that dosn't help you could probely call steam and ask them why. you do run it through steam right?

Don't even call what you did "Hacking". What you did was download cheats to make up for a complete lack of skills of any kind.

Takes a true loser to hack in a game...

Make sure no background programs are running, CTL-ALT-DLT and see whats running, shut as much down as possible. Chances are its not your ping. antivirus/spyware slow things down a bit.

Good tip.

IBJB, let me know if you want me to remotely connect to your PC and have a look at it.

Is this computer at work or at home? If it's at home I need you there to be able to connect to it.

I play Return to Castle Wolfenstein Enemy Territory, and when my Ping started to shoot up real high, I would get kicked. I read about how to fix it, and Like stated before I just defragged my hard drive, and shut down the programs that start on startup that I don't need running. Now my ping is back where it used to be. It sounds like you have already tried this, so I am not sure whats wrong.

I always shut down the stuff I don't want running, all those programs you can't find the options for so they always run on startup... If you're not sure what something is, just type the .exe into google and there are quite a few sites that will be able to tell you.

Look into some spyware/adware/antivirus scanners too. I use Adaware, spybot, and hijackthis lets you take out some of those startup programs.
