Great picture and video choices here... A truly celebrated character actor. If "Full Metal Jacket" had come out earlier, I probably would have blown-off joining the USMC... he was a pretty terrifying D.I... But it didn't, so I did, and they are all pretty much like that! R.I.P. to a true bad-ass. I.M.D.B. has some really interesting trivia and quotes from him, some of which kinda surprised me... "In 1987, he was involved in a jeep accident during the making of Full Metal Jacket (1987). At 1:00 am one morning, he skidded off the road, breaking all the ribs on his left side. He refused to pass out and kept flashing his car lights until a motorist stopped. In some scenes in the movie, he does not move his left arm at all." - Ouch! Considering how much even bruised ribs can make a person wince when moving, that's AMAZING. "Was seriously considered for the role of J. Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man (2002), before J.K. Simmons was cast." - While J.K. Simmons was great, he would have been a really entertaining choice as well. "For me, it's an honor when the military asks me over to Iraq or Afghanistan or GITMO. I visit those places as much as possible. Also Austin - I've always enjoyed going there." - Quote... (makes me really wish I coulda bumped into him sometime) |

Rip R Lee Ermy. My dad was in the marines a little over 10 years after Ermy was discharged. My dad has told me several times that he was the closest that Hollywood ever got to showing what drill instructors are truly like. Semper Fi Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

| Re: RIP R. Lee Ermey Something that is read at Navy/Marine retirements and funerals: For years This marine has stood the watch. While some of us were in our bunks at night this marine stood the watch. While some of us were in school learning our trade this marine stood the watch Yes.. even before some of us were born into this world this marine stood the watch In those years when the storm clouds of war were seen brewing on the horizon of history this marine stood the watch Many times he would cast an eye ashore and see his family standing there needing his guidance and help, needing that hand to hold during those hard times, but he still stood the watch He stood the watch for years. He stood the watch so that we, our families and our fellow countrymen could sleep soundly in safety, Each and every night knowing that a marine stood the watch Today we are here to say "Marine... the watch stands relieved. Relieved by those You have trained ,Guided, and Led... Shipmate you stand relieved.. we have the watch..." |

I'll always remember him from Full Metal Jacket, Mail Call, and being a Glock guy.

I was six years past boot camp when that came out, but he for sure confirmed my choice of Air Force over Marines! RIP, Gunney. |

"There is no racial bigotry here. I do not look down on niggers, kikes, wops or greasers. Here you are all equally worthless." Though i was never allowed to serve my country and as such dont have any personal experience with serving in some branch of armed forces, then that opening scene are one of my favorite film moments. |

I thought it was hilarious that he was originally hired as a Technical Consultant for FMJ. Kubrick overheard him showing the originally cast actor how to act by going "gunny" on a bunch of extras. Kubrick was impressed and gave Ermey the job. He even let Ermey write his own dialouge, which was unheard of for Kubrick. Kubrick would follow Ermey around with a tape recorder while he was doing his thing. They would review the tapes and use the best parts of dialogue. One of my favorite "Hartman" lines: "Get your fat ass over there, Private Pyle! Oh, that's right, Private Pyle. Don't make any ****ing effort to get up to the top of the ****ing obstacle! If God wanted you up there, he would have miracled your ass up there by now, wouldn't he?" |

Well damn, hate to read this. Thanks for all the entertainment over the years, R.I.P. SIR! A Marines Final Inspection The Marine stood and faced God Which must always come to pass He hoped his shoes were shining Just as brightly as his brass. "Step forward Marine, How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek? To My Church have you been true?" The Marine squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't Because those of us who carry guns Can't always be a saint. I've had to work most Sundays And at times my talk was tough, And sometimes I've been violent, Because the world is awfully rough. But, I never took a penny That wasn't mine to keep... Though I worked a lot of overtime When the bills got just too steep. And I never passed a cry for help, Though at times I shook with fear, And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears. I know I don't deserve a place Among the people here, They never wanted me around Except to calm their fears. If you've a place for me here, Lord, It needn't be so grand, I never expected or had too much, But if you don't, I'll understand." There was a silence all around the throne Where the saints had often trod As the Marine waited quietly, For the judgment of his God. "Step forward Marine, You've borne your burdens well, Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets, You've done your time in Hell." Author: Sgt Joshua Helterbran |
