I forget what cabinet I was using on 1, but it could very well be one from Megadeth. 2 was a Korn cab. The ir's are all preset to sound like specific bands, which is fine for now.

Drum beats are hard. There is a lot of human elements that make them sound "right".

Very cool Dude.

You’re great at keeping time with the metal. Most the stuff I play is slower and sloppier so I can definitely appreciate it.

Reverb on drums is key. Makes the snare sound much better.

Pro tip: record at 80bpm, play back at 120bpm.

It falls apart a little on the double time section, but it's fine. This is just so I have some tracks to work with and practice mixing on.

Tom Scholz (Boston) mentioned a cool harmonizing trick I might try. He would record a guitar part. When he went to double it, he would detune the second guitar by a "micro-step". Just enough of a tuning difference to create separation without it sounding dissonant to the first track.

I did something similar. G1 was the LP clone tuned properly. G2 was the RX40 that I pulled off the wall and plugged in without checking.

Reaper has a plug-in that will let you retune a track to your liking as well.

Some possible good news for Gibson: Gibson Bankruptcy Exit Approved

Plus, it looks like Henry J was ousted as CEO!

This is the rig I'm taking to practice tomorrow:

The AX8 is going to run direct to the PA (in stereo ). The small pedal on the left is a Roland momentary foot switch. I have that set to give me 3db of volume boost when held. On release, it goes back to unity. It's great for playing short fills during verses and such. What is really cool is that I can set the start, midpoint and and end point of the pedal press so the pedal functions like a mixer fader instead of an abrupt "on/off". The EH pedal is an expression pedal that functions as a wah (the AX8's wah models are really good!) and the Drop pedal for Eb songs.

So far I have presets as follows:

59 Bassman for clean and bluesy stuff

5F8 Tweed for gritty vintage tone

1970 Marshall 100 Watt Superlead for 60s/70s hard rock stuff

JCM800 that can cover a ton of stuff, sonically.

Dual Rectifier for 90s/modern stuff

How do you like the Drop pedal? Pretty clean or does it have a noticeable amount of digital coloring?

I'll let you know when I try it at practice volume. I've only tried it with high-gain sounds, so it's hard to say. It does track really, really well.

A funny thing... When I got it home, I plugged it and and started playing. I kept hearing these weird, dissonant overtones. I'm thinking "Wtf... I paid $180 for this thing and it doesn't track for crap..." Then I realized I wasn't playing at a really loud volume. I was hearing the processed Eb signal in my monitors, but I was still hearing the E standard "acoustic" sound from my guitar as well and it was totally screwing with my ears.

I forgot to try it clean, but I will say, at gigging volume, I didn't notice any extreme coloring. I was using the Drop with a JCM800 patch on the AX8. JCMs are inherently bright, punchy amps and the Drop didn't seem to affect those qualities.

So... After sorting out some noise issues I did a couple of quickie clips of my AX8 right into my PC.

This is a Marshall Plexi Model with a phaser and a touch of reverb. I kick in a Tube Screamer at 0:35:

This is pretty much my "work horse" patch. It is a Marshal JCM800 & Tube Screamer and a touch of reverb:

Latest addition:

1983 JV (Japan Vintage) Fender '57' Reissue Stratocaster by Fugijen

The early days of Fender Japan is some interesting reading.

the guitar on the right is my B'inlaw's Fugijen 'Alto' solid body guitar with the Circle Fret System, basically a short scale Les Paul.

Yeet! Song #2 in the can. Quite a bit more thought out than song #1, and I actually dedicated a whole track to lead guitar. I don't do lead guitar, nor do I ever, ever touch the whammy on my Ibanez, but it was late, I was tired, and decided to throw caution to the wind. Enjoy. Or not. YMMV.

Hey!

Not bad at all...

Got a Butthole Surfers vibe out of it starting at around the 1:30 mark, that's when I really began to enjoy it - not that the section prior bothered me in the least.

Keep 'em comin'!

Yeah, that last 30 seconds is pretty good.

I've been spending a lot of time playing outside of my comfort zone. I wouldn't say that I'm good by any stretch of the imagination, but improvements are being made.

And one more. Not real sure on the mix on this one. Needs a little more razamataz on the lead too.

IMHO, the percussion is the downfall of this track.

Maybe needs quieting down in the mix, came out a bit too grim and thudding.

(It doesn't sound the least bit happy, compared to "not happy")

I liked the bass, made me think of Red Lorry, Yellow Lorry.
