2020 Mint 400

Me and a buddy are going out to watch the Mint 400 in Primm this year and I am looking to rent a Jeep while we are out there so we can get out into the desert to watch from some of those spots.

I know some people on here live out there or have been to the Mint before, so anybody know a good place to rent a Jeep from while we are there? I feel like just blindly searching isn't going to get me the best deal. Any help is much appreciated.

I went to the Mint a couple of years ago. We stayed in Primm. Nothing like waking up to the sound of dozens of race cars and trucks rolling to the Start line before sunrise. It was good time! "thumbsup"

However, I do not think you will need a Jeep. We watched the race from the Buffalo Bill's hotel (where we stayed) and another location a few miles North on I-15. A passenger car could get around anywhere they will let you spectate. I really wanted to camp out in the desert and watch the race. I learned that they do not allow that. (probably why some of the attraction of Baja).

Here's a video I took of Bryce Menzies from the second location we watched. I do strongly suggest getting a hold of UHF/VHF radio to listen to race and pit crew traffic. Makes it a lot more entertaining. You can hear my radio in this video.

You dont need a Jeep to get to spectate. A crossover or whatever is fine. A car will allow you to get to many spots as well. Like mentioned, grab a Baofeng UV5R from Amazon to listen in. I believe all the frequencies for the teams are public...Just dont transmit on them!

If you're actually looking to do some Jeeping, there is a place called Las Vegas Rock Crawlers that is pretty cool. They hand you the keys to a built LJ (one tons and 40s). You convoy as a group out to the location of your choice, they spot you through the obstacles, feed you lunch, and when you are done you drive back to the drop off location. It is not cheap, but it is a great experience. I'd suggest Logandale or Sand Hollow if you do it.

Re: 2020 Mint 400

I really wanted the Jeep to drive around around and explore, it would just also be our transportation to/from the race.

Sick! I would love to go but it would be either that or proline BTF so you know which I choose...

Anyway watch for Blake Wilkey in his class 11 bug! Hes a local hero here from el cajon. Should be in a yet to be revealed SHREDDY livery.

Have a BLAST!

Thanks for the pics, Jason.

I don't know much about off-road racing suspensions, but I can see there is a difference in the IFS between the Heatwave Ford, and the 2 rigs immediately under that pic. I wonder which setup has better handling characteristics?

Re: 2020 Mint 400

You're seeing the difference between Ford's Twin-I-Beam suspension, and an A-Arm suspension (ironically installed on a the Heatwave truck that would have originally been equipped with I-beams.) The beauty of I-beams is in its simple and stout design that is very easy to get big wheel travel out of since the arms are so long (driver's side wheel/I-beam attaches to passenger side frame rail, passenger side I-beam/wheel is attached to driver's side frame rail), but the A-arm setup has clear advantages in the handling department. As you can see in the photos, the I-beam trucks have a significant change in camber as the suspension cycles (since camber just swings in a simple arc from a single point) which makes tires want to roll under the front end when drooped or cycling through a turn. Though it's not something you can see in the photos, I-beams have a similar change in caster angle as the suspension cycles since caster is controlled by a radius arm that pivots from a single point (longer radius arms can minimize the effect.) That can make the truck feel very loose when it's drooped out, and makes for a heavier feeling steering when compressed. An a-arm setup can be built to keep the camber/caster swing in a specific range throughout its travel and offers a more consistent and predictable feel, but it's harder to get as much wheel travel from it considering space constraints/packaging. They both can be setup to work extremely well. At a moderate price point, I'll stick with I-beams, but if one is willing to spend the money and design time, at higher end of the $$$ spectrum, the A-arms have the advantage.

Great pics JDM74! I was glued to the live feed on You Tube all day. Best coverage of a desert race yet. They just keep getting better and better with the live feed. Pat on the back to the video/tv crews for the Mint 400 event.

The next race is the San Filipe 250 with Score International. That'll be another good race.
