Looking for deck building advice...
 

I'm building a floating deck. The joist hangers are driving me mental. I can't get the joists to sit flush with the frame. They seem to be about a 1/16" too high. I've tried putting "wings" on one of my joists, hanging in on the frame and then placing the hangers, but they just aren't cooperating.

Any advice?

Got a pic of the hanger? I know every state has different amendments to the building code, and I am in the construction field, but generally you nail the joist in place, then add the hanger.

Get your joist flush drive a couple nails through the rim joist then put your hangers on. Looking at your picture in the back of the deck you might have to put the hangers on first don’t nail them until to have it flush and 3 nails in it through your rim joist or frame.

If you are using 2x6 (1.5 x 5.5 actually( its easy to do really. Just find Center, measure 3/4 off center. draw a line, that gives you a line to hang your joist along to keep it perpendicular. Now, when you hang the joist, just be sure the inside part of the bottom of the joist, is even with the very bottom of the frame board. If you are using all 2x6, then the bottoms will be even, which will keep the top even. The other option is to measure 5.5 inched down the line you just drew, and draw a line there, that will be where the bottom of the joist will be. When you put the hanger on, make sure its inside bottom is even with the bottom of this line as that is where the bottom of the joist will be.

The easiest way ist to just put the hanger on the joist, making sure it is fit well to the bottoms and sides, then just hang the joist lining the tops, and attach the hanger to the frame...

Lastly, new wood, even kiln dried is still a bit damp and not always even. some boards may be a little thicker, a little taller a little wider than the next. So just set you tops to be even, and let the bottoms fall where they may. Also this wood will shrink a bit as it finishes drying out in the elements. so long as a board isn't like 1/8th or 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch over the other nearby boards, it won't be a big deal. 1/16 of an inch will swell/shrink and setting down and will not really be noticeable. 1/8 in will start to be noticeable.
Keep the tops level and you'll be good
