Man, for the first 10 - 15 seconds that rocket moved impossibly slow. It was great to see, hopefully most (if not all) of our astronauts will get launched from US soil.

The acceleration is unreal, and the Video feed was unbelievably great!

Glad it didn't get scrubbed again. Was pretty damn cool to watch. Gonna try to catch the docking in the morning, provided I don't stay up too late tonight!

Not sure if they showed the same feed on all stations, was watching it on the Science channel. The video was great, but I thought was questionable programming showing the shuttle disasters just a few minutes from launch.

I watched Discovery, with Cris Jacobs babbling. The cameras on the second stage and first were side by side, then when the booster did a perfect 10 on the barge.... Wild!

This was very cool, one of the best things to happen this year by far.

I haven't followed SpaceX because Elon Musk is or was involved. So I know nothing about the project. What is so special, new or unique about this trip?

Two firsts... sort of...

Its the first manned launch from US soil in 9 years. If all goes well, we will not have to send our people to Khuzistan to get them to the ISS.

Its the first private firm to launch people into space.

It’s the first time in the new era of space travel where private companies work with NASA, that humans have been launched into space. It’s also been a while since it (Humans launched into space) has last happened on American soil after the NASA shuttle program was shut down.

*edit. Greatscott beat me to it

Watch the science of landing the booster on a raft in the middle of the ocean. It was comparable to dropping a pencil off the Empire State Building and landing on its eraser!
Not only that but the cockpit screens we’re totally different looking

Oh yes, I did see this and it is extremely impressive.

When are the SpaceX astronauts returning to Earth?

Personally, I think privatizing space travel has the potential to be dangerous. After humans destroy Earth to the point where it can’t sustain life, you better have enough money to travel to Mars or whichever planet is colonized. Thankfully, I don’t think that’s going to happen in our lifetime.

There is danger no matter what. What this opens up is more opportunity for advancement of space travel, both for getting something to outer space, and for moving it away from the Earth. Imagine if the Wright Brothers would have cut their engines as soon as the left the ground, that is were we are in our evolution of space travel. Making the whole mess private opens the doors for entrepreneurs to examine different means propulsion and thrust, and get paid for it. One big advancement I think we'll see out of this is the practical introduction of the aerospike engines, removing the need for detachable boosters.

Very true that it's a danger no matter what.

I had to look it up. It looks like a mouse, but reality says it wouldn't survive. There's intense heat on the rocket. Plus, there's no oxygen in space. Although they are supposedly "genetically modified" mice...

Yeah i had my alarm set for both events, and it looked pretty darn good when they got that candle lit.
I also saw the docking after i got home yesterday from a day of making all my girls happy ( 2 X niece - 1 little sister - and my mother )

It is no longer easy to be a nice guy, at least not at my age and with my decrepit body, changing 4 wheels on my car using a jack and a impact wrench, damn near pushed me over the edge, so good thing i times that as the last order of the day.

But of course if being a nice guy was easy, everyone would be doing it.

That whole process is amazing on two fronts... First, that they can get those boosters back to the launch site, and second, that they can soft-land them like they do.

Even more amazing is soft-landing the third booster on a barge in the middle of the ocean. It makes me wonder if that barge just has to be close and the booster locks on to it, or of the booster is actually programmed to land at a specific location, and if the barge is not in the perfect position it will just go into the water.

I believe they GPS walk it into the “target area” and try to drop that toothpick into the bullseye.
I’m not ever going to be a rocket scientist, but we get to watch!
