Washed my remote for the truck.

Hey guys.

I just recently wash my car starting remote, and I was wondering are they replaceable? It a 2001 Ford F-150.

It was on its way out anyway, the little piece of metal that held the flat/button battery in place broke away, and I had to jam a piece of Kleenex, or electrical tape in between one half of the cover and the actual battery, to keep it squished to the board, then I washed it. Now when I adjust the battery, and start pressing buttons the little red light comes on, but it doesn’t start the truck anymore, or unlock the doors. So it’s either the remote, or it’s a short in the truck, but I’m not sure where to look for the fuse on the truck. I’ve checked every fuse under the drivers side dash, none are burnt.

Once in a while my truck will go into theft mode, and I can’t start it until I adjust the battery on the busted remote and unlock the doors, or shut off the alarm. Now I don’t have a remote to do either.

So anything you guys might have to say would be a great help.

They're all over Amazon, ebay etc., but the quality might not be the same as the original, so don't expect it to last another 20years :D
For the $15 or so you'll pay though, you can probably just expect to replace it every year or couple of years.

The problem you might have is programming it to your truck - I've not done it with an F150, some are easier than others if you have an original key left which it seems like you do. A quick internet search should give you the results you need :D

Was it the little square black remote or an all-in-one? The chipped key is what starts the car. I had an '02 F150, bought remotes on ebay. If i recall correctly, you get in the truck, lock, unlock doors, turn key on/off 8 times then the doors will lock, unlock themselves. Then you hit the lock button on the remote.

When I was a locksmith many years ago, we sold replacements and did the programming, too. Cheaper than the dealer, for sure!

Your results may vary, of course... ;-)

I can't speak for Alberta, but we have a chain where I live called "Batteries Plus Bulbs." They specialize in esoteric batteries, car batteries, remotes and programming. They also do chip keys. So, if you can find a similar type of store where you are, they are vastly cheaper than a dealer.

I had two chip keys made for my Nissan as a walk-in for what one key with an appointment would have cost me at a dealer.

Thanks buds. I’ll order one a.s.a.p. I wasn’t clear earlier. The remote that I washed was from an aftermarket car starting...system that one of the many previous owners installed.

I still have the original remote that came with the truck keys, it’s the one that has a little red panic button, and lock & unlock buttons, and it’s square with rounded corners. It’s doesn’t kick my truck out of theft mode, or I haven’t figured out if it’s possible OEM remote.
