Exclamation Attn. video buffs...

Here shortly, I want to try making some vids and putting them on my PC/web. I've got a Panasonic Mini DV cam. I know that I need some kind of i.Link cable to connect the cam to the PC, but does anybody know which one? I know that it's 4 pin on the cam, but where exactly does it hook up on the PC? (ie. which port, etc.) Also, is special editing software required, or is there a feature in Paint Shop Pro 8 that I can use? (I already have that software).

Can anyone give me some advice?

Thanks in advance,
Rich

rich,
does your PC have firewire ports? if so, that's where you will plug in the cable from the camera. typically it's a 4 pin on the camera side and a 6 pin on the computer side. this is a very common cable and you should be able to pick it up at any office supply, radio shack, or computer store. hope this helps!

Rich,

I bought a firewire card (plugs into an open PCI slot) that came with Studio 8, but this was over 2 years ago. You should be able to find a similiar set-up (card/software combo) at Best Buy. I love how easy Studio 8 (9 is out as of now) is to use. The SFR3 vid was my first attempt at vid making...so that tells you how easy it is to use.

*EDIT* Here's a link at Best Buy to the current version of what I have...

I hope I'm not hi-jacking the thread here (drop kick me in the head if I am-sorry ), but what would be my best bet for converting Hi8 (analog) format tape to a digital format I could edit on the computer?

I saw a mention in the Studio 8 page on best buy of some means to do this? :?

Thanks for the info guys! I really doubt that my PC has firewire inputs, at most, it's a fire HAZZARD!

JIA, I just may check into that software. I got a PM from someone in the valley who may be able to help me out in the software dept. when I get the right cable.

Thanks again!

John, the Studio kit that I posted a link to has RCA inputs as well as firewire.

Quote:
Compatible Camcorders: Analog|Digital

Video Inputs: Composite RCA, S-video mini DIN, 6-pin IEEE 1394 (FireWire)

Supported Video Formats: AVI|BMP|DV|Hi8|JPEG|MPEG-1|MPEG-2|NTSC|PAL|TIFF|VHS|VHS-C|WMF
I hear it's a good idea to get a nice cable for Hi8 editing, like a Monster Cable. Word is that the Monster cables are better for non-digital use. Not sure how much truth there is to it, though.

If you have a digital camcorder, get a digital connection for your computer (firewire, IEEE1394) You'll get much better results.

Just make sure you have plenty of hard drive space available. DV video is something like 4.5gb per minute of video.
