Took my first dear with a 20 gauge shotgun and a slug. Iowa is a shotgun state as well (I didn't live there but we had 120 acres there so thats where we hunted). Since then I have used a 270 for most game, I have several of them, love them all. My 223 is my favorite though. We use it for prarie dog hunting out in northwestern Nebraska and southern SD. Sighted in at around 300 yards, 8" sunshade, full ruger composite stocks, 1" stainless barrel, bipod. AWESOME. |

Hey Harley, that .223 sounds pretty sweet. What make/model is it? Do you guys think it could reliably take down a decent-sized whitetail at close range (about 150 Ft.)? I'm just curious. As far as the shooting a slug through a shotgun with a choke in the barrel-I shot mine, and it didn't have any problems. I shot buck shot also, and it was all right. I did notice the choke was starting to loosen up after a few shots, but after a quick torque, it was good. Last edited by john alardin; 08-19-2007 at 10:04 PM. |

I remember shooting my grandfathers 8mm Mauser. If you want to reach out and touch it, it'll do it. I remember dad telling me to shoot at a card he'd stuck on a tree. When I shot dad told me I had missed because he saw the limbs behind the tree move. Turned out that I shot through the tree. When the back side of the tree blew apart the debris hit the limbs. It was fun to shoot. I carried the M60 for a few years with 25th ID. That was fun, but in a different way. Carrying it sucked (23lbs for the weapon alone...not counting the ammo and the other 60+lbs of gear on your back), but I got used to it. For pure fun...skeet shooting with a 12ga and mags. |

Ah, the good old 12-Ga., excellent choice! The 3-In. mags started to get to me after a while, especially the heavier turkey shot and slugs. To the gun savvy, what would have more kick, a 3.5 Inch 12-Ga, or a 3-In. 10-Ga? BTW, both would be firing the same type/size of shot.

I've been shooting for 3 days for 8 hours a Day... Ruger 9mm's... They suck donkey balls. The first day my gun stove topped ( Double Feed ) 3 times on me... Changed guns. Happened two more times. Second Day gun worked alright, but I had a broken rear site. Last day Gun double feed all day. Stupid range instructor keep blaming my grip... But some how I had the highest scores of the week out of three training classes. My Glock Model 22 44cal... never once jammed or had any problems. Shoot a few thousand rounds through it. I'm in the market for a new pistol. Just can't figure which on I want. Either another Glock 40cal, Sig 9mm, or a S&W MP edition.... |
