xj's are super simple to find under $1000, heck I only paid $180 for my running 88. Check Craigslist.com, look for someones project. I know in the chicago craigslist there is one with 3" lift 4.0 Kuhmo Mt's for $1500. Just watch that rear axle with 33's. I would upgrade to a ford 8.8" (bonus is you get disc brakes). When you get one PB blast EVERYTHING, soak all the bolts for weeks before you do any work, you wont regret it.

keep it under 4" lift or you will need to buy the slip yoke aliminater kit, high dollar piece.I built one 94 with 4.oL auto good power train 3" lift 33" tires lower t-case one inch buy the kit to keep the auto from upshifting while desending and youre set beat the **** out of it.Then put a locker in the rear swaybar disconects would be good idea, they kinda need the swaybar for street.

Swaybar? They are over rated. I broke the bolts on mine when I was changing the bushings, needless to say front and rear bars are in the trash. Given Im only running a 3.5" lift but I dont notice much body roll over having the bars.

The one I play with is an '87. I think 1987 was the most common year to get a Dana 44 rear end. We got this one with only 83,XXX miles for 800 bucks. The bad things about the Renix era XJ's are: Most take a couple seconds to start. And not many header options to fix the stock one when it cracks, I think the options are Borla, Pacesetter (hard fit for the AW4's), or stock.

Then

Now
