| CAD Programs
I would like to start somewhat of a discussion about any CAD programs or things you have designed in CAD. First, I was wondering if there were any CAD programs out there that were free or a demo and would be good for a beginner. Second, what CAD program do you use and how much did you pay for it? Also to harley, what program are you using? |

I'm using Solid Edge 2D Drafting V19. It's free, you only need to register. You can do it here http://www.solidedge.com/free2d/amer...2D_siemens.cfm .

Not sure about free CAD software, but at work I use Microstation V8 non stop...I also use it at home, but I also have Solidworks at home that I dabble in now and then. Here's a great thread in the "Tools and Procedures" section: 3D modeling/rendering software Last edited by Offroader5; 08-16-2007 at 01:49 PM. |

I've tried using Alibre any times and figure I'll try it once more. I've spent a good portion of my day messing with Google sketch up its not half bad. But I want a real CAD.

I have Instant Deck Design, a program from Office Depot. It cost $20, and it is easy to use. It is (I think) similar to Autocad. BTW, why are the new versions of Autocad so expensive?

I don't really care for MS all that much for 3d but it is pretty decent for 2d. I run V8 now but we will go to XM soon. | |

Civil work is about all that MS is good for. (just kidding...) i use AutoCAD LT 2008 at work (which i think the company having us designers use only LT is going to turn out to be a big mistake...) if you don't mind shelling out $400 you get all the full 2D features of AutoCAD, just none of the 3D capability. plus for that price, you get unlimited seats. at home i use AutoCAD 2000i i got from when i was going to ITT. outside of CAD school, i personally haven't come across to many situations where i have needed to do a 3D drawing. |

I hear ya.... I learned a lot from my dad also (machinest) and taught myself what I learned there. Only a few of the instructors new what was going on. Luckily I didn't have to pay much to go there. Seemed like a good school in the beginning but it's just a company making money. Ok sorry for high jacking back on topic! |
