Default First 1:1 Rig '89 Cherokee ?

Yep, after going wheelin yesterday in my buddies Yota, ive been bitten by the bug! Im pretty poor at the moment and just want something cheap that I can work on if needed. It needs to run for now though. I saw this and actually know the kid who is selling it. Havent talked to him in a year or so though. The only info I know is what is listed. I emailed him asking about mileage, what engine, 4wd ok, whats wrong with it, clean title, etc? Thats all I could think of at the moment. For the price and as long as its driveable as is what do you think? Im not too concerned with appearence, I can fix that later if needed. I need it to be sound and driveable as is, otherwise my father won't like it in the driveway.

http://newlondon.craigslist.org/car/378538576.html

Im not too familiar with Jeeps or 4x4's in general. I have an '02 GTI right now. Anything I should specifically ask about? The ad was a month old so for all I know its already sold. Any thoughts would be helpful. Id rather not buy it and have it breakdown on me my first time out on the trail.

Thanks

DO NOT GET IT. Look around and find a better deal, perferably clean stocker.
Unibody is cracked I bet, and if the unibody is cracked its woth **** to sell as a whole truck!
d35 might be a POS

New from the dealer:
RE 4.5" Spring pack= 1k
33 TSL's=1k on rims about

XJ=
500-1000 will get you a compelete stock one that has never been abused.

I got mine for 400, not abused at all but 91 and older has open cooling system DEF change that out mine has it and its not overheating but it squeals when leeting out pressure which is embarrasing pulling up to get gas and turn it off and it hisses real loud, and the cap sometimes about blows off. One time it was backing off and I took off incase it blew all over!

AW4 auto 4 speed and AX15 manual 5 speed are the ONLY TRANS id get
NP242 has a lil less hop ups then the np 231 and a lil weaker but NP 242 has 3 4x4 positions and the np 231 has 2.

4.0 is the only motor to go in a cherokee (only 6 cyl XJs have that year)

If you go look at it, look very close for any structural damage from abuse or enviroment (rust, driving with "road tards", etc....)

I had a 95 cherokee with the 4.0 and a 5 speed. It had a 2 inch Rancho suspension lift a 1 inch body lift and some 32's. I beat the crap out of it for the better part of 6 years till it got murdered by a damn mini van.

Thanks so far guys. I don't want something that is gonna fall apart. I might be better off finding a stock wrangler or cherokee and know that it is in nicer shape. Maybe ill just sell my tamiya wrangler and other stuff to get some more cash towards a rig. Ill wait to hear back from him and let you know what he says. I asked if he wanted to trade for my Canon 10D, which he might

I think you meant "closed" cooling system. And yes, it is a good idea to swap over to the late model "open" radiator and overflow bottle..then while your at it, put in a 3 row rad instead of stock. Best mod I have done to mine yet.

4.0's were NOT the only motor to go in Cherokees. There was also a POS V6 and an I4....but you are correct, that year has the 4.0 I6. The 4.0's started in 87 and then in 91 they updated them to a "high output" 4.0.

Here is a pic of mine.... It is a 96 with the 4.0 I6. make sure you avoid doing this.....

Buy a 4WD!!!! Lol. I got a pretty good deal on mine from my uncle and it was before I realized that I wanted a 4x4. I hit the spot that we had just dug my grandparents motor home out of. It had sat there for about a week and we were pretty far out in the dunes so it was soft stuff. The motor home was buried all the way up to the frame. WHAT A PAIN! LOL! Well, there was no other way to get out of camp except through where we had just dug it out and made it even softer and more loose than before. OOPS!!! I have been looking for a transfer case and front axle, but no luck yet. Man! I wish I would have known I would be into wheeling now!

It was a Chevy donated 2.8 and the only thing it does well, is anchor a boat at the lake It's what they put in them prior to using the I6 4.0 when the Cherokee was still an AMC and not a Jeep.

Here's another tidbit......mine is an 87 Wagoneer model. There is not one place on it that says it's a Cherokee. In all the parts books, the truck is actually a Wagoneer...but when you tell people that when you go in for parts, they think you have an older wide track Waggy and it confuses the heck out of them.

In 84-86/87 (not sure on 87) they used the Chevy 2.8 V6 I wouldnt go as far as to call it a POS but its pretty close. ANY of the 4.0's are better.

Oh....I would go that far

It made less power than the same era 4 banger...hardly makes it worth even calling it a V6. :-P

What would be a very nice find would be one of the overseas Italian 4 banger 2.5 turbo diesels....those things made almost 250 ft./lbs. of torque

I've got an 'ol 86 TBI 4 banger 5 speed sittin' in the back yard still, that I just can't seem to part with

Well he still hasnt replied to me and im about to list a crap load of my rc gear including my Tamiya Wrangler :( for sale to fund a 1:1. Im keeping my Beckworks FJ-40 tuber...for now . As far as im concerned im gonna pass on it(unless it runs great!) and save more money to pay my dad the cash I owe him and to pick up a 1:1 rig.

The only thing that keeps drawing me back to it is that it looks awesome w/ the tires and has a nice stance...but I can do that to any Cherokee.
