Stupid Question because I'm computer stupid! Okay on the lower right of the screen you have the 2 little computer screen that light up when you connected to the internet. I'm pretty sure I have some spyware issues because I'm getting some pop-ups and I didn't used to. You can put the mouse over the above mentioned part and it tells you ho wmany bytes you send and recieve. I know you send out info just during normal surfing but right not it says I've sent 227,019 bytes and recieved718,098 bytes. I haven't sent any e-mails or anything. And when I very frist get on it might say something like 10,000 sent and 20,000 recieved. It seems like I'm sending out way more than normal. Whats going on? Also the 2 litttle screens does the front on represent my computer and the back one represent the remote computer/ server??? Like I said I'm kinda computer stupid. It's just a personal PC what can be stolen I don't really have any important info on here, But can people hack your Paypal or get Credit card info from where you hav ebought stuf online? Or are you guys just hacking it to steal my crawler set-ups? LOL |
That's your network connection. Bytes sent and recieved are data pakets that move through the NIC (your network card). And that's any traffic that comes and goes through the NIC. Internet, email, network packets to other computers in your home network (if there are any). If you want to take it off the tool bar, go into you network properties, and take the check off "Show icon in system tray when connected" It has nothing to do with spyware, it's a part of windows. |
The fact that you understand the concept of sending/receiving data and what that icon tells you puts you leaps and bounds ahead of many casual computer users. :) The higher number of bytes sent could be from anything really. If you're worried, download and install Ad-Aware. It's one of the more popular spyware programs. Another is SpyBot Search and Destroy Rumor has it that once you log in to RCC, a virus gets downloaded that immediately scan all hard drives for porn and sends it straight to badger and jason... |
Since I'm sending what I believe to be a greater amount than normal just during normal surfing what can that mean? |
You could have a some sort of spyware, or it could be Windows doing an automatic update or any number of things... |
You also asked if one of the little icons represented your computer while the other the host computer. In reality one is for your wireless connection and the other is for a wired network. |
I was refering to the 2 little screens as one icon. My laptop has 2 icons one for wireless one for the dail-up connection. You know one blinks/flashes then the other one does. I have dail-up with SUCKS can some when it is going really slow or won't connet to the page only one blinks. Like when RCC was down just the front one would blink, which leads me to believe that one represents my computer or network. |

Got a bunch of crap on my computer last week. Really slowed it down and eventually caused it to freeze. Search Panda AV, download the trial. I did, and it got rid of everything. Turns out Spybot S&D and McAfee were both infected. EDIT: Here's the link. Also get the update for it, it adds over a million more definitions. |
I have been running AVG anti virus and spyware and have had great luck. It used to be free but it is still worth the money. I also run Firefox and I don't get the spybots and pop ups like on IE. |
