Cheap gas cars??

I need a car that is cheap on gas..
my cuz just got an eclips(sp) I like them cars but dont really want one
mabey a civic? crx? what would you guys think?
I have an s-10 thinking bout swaping a 4banger? how cheap are the 4 banger s dimes?

EeePee 10-28-2007 11:24 AM

92-95 Civic should get you about 38 mpg stock.

I had my 94 hatch on a freeway trip once, I removed just under 500 pounds of not needed stuff (everything but a seat, a steering wheel, and a shift knob), and I got 53 mpg.

My 92 Civic Si hatch got pretty good mileage. I don't think I ever reached the 50mpg range but 40mpg was not hard to get.
I was able to fit my beach cruiser in the back of it without removing the front tire. Snowboard gear no problem.
It also had a nicer interior than my 2001 Prerunner.

Look for a 94~95 Civic EX coupe with a 5 speed.
They come with:
Power Moon roof, power windows/locks, AC, power steering, ABS, 1.6L SOHC VTEC
They are a little sporty and fun to drive too.

Any 3 cyl geo metro. They average 50+ on the highway and 40 in town.

Good choice. '94 was the revision year. They'll likely have two airbags instead of just one. And in a time like these where everyone else is driving a 5000 pound monster, you'll be glad to have some additional safety stuff.

I started out with a '94 DX hatch, then put in a 1.6 liter VTEC.

i drive this. 23mpg. it might get shitty milage, but i can charge people to haul things. i havent paid for gas in that truck in about 6 months

that have a 94 civic that need the engin put back in..has a stage 1 clutch? in it..
also fount a geo 3ly for 200 bucks..I am thinking about that but idk I love the civcs.
What is the pros and cons in the civics?

EeePee 10-28-2007 03:03 PM

Cons about a Civic are the steroetypes. Make it look dumb, or drive it like you're dumb and you're a ricer. But rightfully so! :flipoff:

That's it. It's a great car otherwise.

Avoid rear fender rust at all costs. Right at the upper leading edge of the rear fenderwell. Every other body panel can be replaced easily but that one.

Every imaginable replacement part and hop up is available for the Civic.

Yeah 94+ has dual airbags. And I think some 93's got abs.

Nice. I never did much to my Si hatch. I was to paranoid that it would get stolen. Then it did.:-(

I did however have a 92 SiR when I was stationed over seas. That had a DOHC VTEC engine.

No more upgrading imports for me. I want to restore a domestic, build a Caterham, or atleast work on something that will ratain its value.
Had some good times with them though,

slobin3d 10-28-2007 06:38 PM

we picked up a 97 4 door geo w/ 4cyl with 87,000 for $700. not to bad for the price considering it uses less gas in a month then my scout does in a week:shock::lol:

mudhunter 10-28-2007 07:26 PM

How can i get a bit more power out of that 2 door gumball??
I think i hit 50mph in it.hehe

Rat1 10-28-2007 07:45 PM

Well if you want to sell it then let me know as I may be interested.

I have one 3cyl hatch right now and would not mind another one for the wife to run around town with as it would save me a ton of money.

TerribleOne 10-28-2007 08:58 PM

X2 on the Civic. Great little cars. Only downfall would be the theft rate and the high insurance due to that. May be hard to find a clean one aswell with a clean title.

The eclipse is also a great car, more importantly the motor 4G63"thumbsup" Not the best on the gas mileage though.

Geo's, shit 40 mpg+ easy. Just stay away from large hills:lol:

Both very fun btw. ;-)

Or you could just give the car a good tune up.
It probably could use one.
Buy a bottle of seafoam and deep creep.
Use the seafoam and clean your throttle body with the deep creep and an old tooth brush.
Then
Replace all fluids: Coolant, Oil, Gear oil/autotranny fluid, PS fluid
New: Distrubitor cap, rotor, wires, sprakplugs, airfilter, Fuel filter, oil filter

Reset the ECU, set the timing and you will notice a change if the car needed it.

I did the tune up method on the GF's Prizm and it went from being barely driveable to a healthy car again. I was even suprised. All of the parts cost me about $150 at autozone.

mudhunter 10-30-2007 03:10 PM

how about a crx?? i fount a clean 90 crz w/ sports a Wings West body kit and wing.It has been lowered 2" on 17" wheels. The front headlights were replaced with Halo projector lights and clear corners have been added.Motor swapped B16 (1.6L) with Intake,DC Cat-back exhaust..that is from the add..

EeePee 10-30-2007 03:26 PM

It's a 17 year old cheap car that's been riced out, and beaten on. You don't want that.

Shaun 10-30-2007 03:45 PM

You don't want to touch that. If you want a civic or a CRX try and find a stock one, you don't want one some rice boy has fawked with.

I have a 99 S10 Ext Cab 4 banger auto that I use for a daily driver. Gutless, but 30mpg. I paid 7K for it 3 years ago, and I've already put 82,000 miles on it since I got it.
I like the Honda's but I have to agree with an earlier statement. High theft. The company I work for has them as runner cars. We've had 6 stolen in the last 4 years.
The Metro's scare me. I would hate to be in an accident with one. They would stick you and the car in the ground after.

I just sold my 98 Monte Carlo LS to my daughter. Fun thing is with that car, it gets 26 city, 32 Hwy. Nice car, very comfy to drive, and all the goodies. Plus it has lots of room to haul people and things. There are lots of them around cheap. Just give it a good tune.

There's always the Kia or a Hyundai.
